yes you would need some form of current limiting, all drivers use resistors to limit current so im not sure what you mean. you could make a DDL driver with a lm350 to limit the current

It's better to use a driver. It's the same with all laser diodes. You can either use a DDL driver or 3x AMC7135 drivers. I remember Billg519 once told me he used 8x AMC7135 drivers to provide 2800mA to an IR laser.

it would be more sensible to use a DDL driver but use the lm350 regulator instead of the LM317, the LM350 can output up to 6 amps i think

You're wright. It's easier to build a DDL driver instead of 3x AMC drivers. Though there's no need for anywhere near 6 amps since it's a 1W IR laser.
