07E Laser Box Build
______________________________________

I wanted to try something a bit different than what I've seen and done for laser hosts, so I went browsing for project boxes and found a really nice alu extrusion box and picked it up. I was planning on originally making this just a lab style laser mounted to a heatsink, but I had a better idea. Portable "laser box". The most difficult thing about this build is the fact that it was all one piece, so I'd have to shove my fingers in the box if I needed to get at something, otherwise all the wiring was done through the mounting holes.

Also, this post counts as my 1000th post, making me an LPF vet! ...Right? :p

This is the best fitting piece I could find, for the heatsink. This is before cut to size.

Here's the heatsink cut to size, just with a bandsaw. Notice the Sanwu BE as I was tasting for how much clearance I could get for the adapter inside of the box without hitting the button. Turns out the adapter had to stay outside of the box for the most part.

A look at some of the wiring, definitely an annoying part to this build because of the lack of access. You can see in this shot I'm testing different parts of the circuit. You might also realize that I had the holes drilled and the switch in place.

My solution for the contact board was this piece of wood, a couple of bolts/nuts/washers with just the tension holding the springs in place. This turned out a lot nicer than I though.

This is the battery bay I designed on Sketchup, I ended up 3d printing it because the tolerances were way to tight to create with tools. At a couple points the walls were smaller than a mm. This takes 2*18350 batteries.

Final shots

You might notice that there are black spacers between the project box and the center button, this is because the depth of the button is too big for the actual box.

I'll be adding more shots later but that's all for now.

Very nice build, like the choice of diodes the the 07 is one of my favorite colors. Think the choice of boxs is superb. Like the stainless steel look. Looks like a pretty decent heat sink, what kind of run times can you get out of it? Great build thread. :gj:~~~~~edit~~ now that your a LPF vet, can we call you an "old guy" now ? :D

Hey thanks everyone! I saw a thread for me in the vets section but still have no access.

I thought the illuminated switch went really well with the build because the colour matches almost exactly. The LED is on whenever the laser is on, so whenever the momentary or latching switch is closed.

RCB, in this case I'd be thinking INSIDE the box :p You're welcome to post pics of your box builds here, I love seeing them! Thought that a mobile box build is unconventional for a laser pointer making it a bit unique so I really like the concept. I've got to get some nicer shots with the BE mounted on it too.

Hey Sean, looks like the one I sold you but more nicely done! I was considering a big blue light on the one I made but decided not to.
Obviously it's yours now but here's the one I built guys!

Very nice, well thought out build.
I really like those radiused corners on the box, it gives it a clean 'high end' look!

Very nice indeed ElectricPlasma !
Welcome to the VETs too BTW.
I love the illuminated switch, I've picked up a couple myself to use in the future.

Good job, +rep.

nice labby build there!!! I am definitely wanting to try building a labby sometime.
yeah, that illuminated cyan switch is a classy addon!

Stylish, somewhat Apple-like. Reminds me of the LaCie thunderbolt HD enclosures.

Thanks guys for the comments and reps! Very solid wiring job Crazlaser, I can say that for sure.

Thanks! It's apple-like because of the "flat" aluminum look, it looks like the exact same finish on my old Macbook Air. ;)

Nice build and I love the lighted switch. I've been thinking about something like it, spent 2hrs on ebay last night looking at project boxes.
+rep if I can and congratulations on becoming a vet

Cool build EP. Maybe there is room for a Blackbuck 8a and a fancy potentiometer. I find the option to adjust output on the fly irresistible.
