Hey,
I think that might be a bit high? Just doing the quick math:
$30 Diode
$15 (guess) for a heatsink
$15 Aixiz glass lens and module
$5 Host
$25 (guess, max) for a driver

That's a max of maybe $90 to put together. But that could even be high because we don't know if it's really a $25 driver, or a $5 driver, or the driver that came with the host, etc. Also, it may not cost $30 for an 8x anymore, with 12x available for ~$40.

I don't know. It could even be less than $90 to put this together?

And the uncertainty of not knowing who made it originally, is another factor. I'm not trying to barter, cause I'm not in the market for a pre-made laser. Just throwing in my thoughts.

I'm thinking I'd have to agree with rhd. You can buy a new 405nm, 400mw, waterproof laser for about $100 from certain well respected companies. I'd think a used custom build should come in cheaper then a brand new, warrantied, factory build.

I'm not sure where you all get these prices but 12x's are $50-60 and ggw 6x's are ~$35

If u can show me where to get a real 12x for $40 let me know I'll buy a couple right now

Back when these kits were available, the 8x diode was still very expensive, it probably cost him a lot more than $125 to build this.

These hosts are unique in the fact that the back part screw on to turn the laser on. there is no switch.
If this was built back when 8x were new, then it will most definitely contain a Flex drive.
Last time I saw a picture of this host, it was being shown to me by two federal agents

I bet there's a great story to go along with that! ?

For the record, I really wasn't intending to be mean or come off negatively in my attempted price breakdown. He was struggling with the price tag, and even posed the question as to whether the price was maybe a bit high.

I wasn't suggesting that it wasn't a cool laser, or that he hadn't paid a lot for it himself. In fact I DO think it's a cool laser. But in seeing it, I automatically went through the whole "Neat! I wonder how big of a hole in my wallet I'd have to burn to make one of those?" thought pattern!

Having said that, the fact that 8x prices have fallen, DOES matter. It doesn't make the laser less interesting, but it DOES make it less expensive to create today. It's probably silly to talk market value when this whole hobby field is prone to such strange market forces, but the fact that this would cost less to create today kind of has to factor in to the price you could expect to sell it for. Especially since a lot of the people on this forum would similarly try to figure out their own costs in creating a similar laser (as opposed to buying it pre-made)

So a constructive suggestion - you might actually get MORE than your asking price by selling locally, to non-laser people. (just force them to buy glasses first!)

I wasn't saying that it doesn't matter, true you could build a stronger laser for cheaper now, but this probably cost him well over $200 to build, so he's taking a large loss at $125. Moh, glad you came back after what happened.
