Hi all,
Well, the title says it all.
I'm looking for a few CHEAP laser pointers/diodes for a learning experience.
They can be completely dead or burned out. I just need them to be "complete" and not been hit with a hammer or other..:D

I want to disect a few to see whats inside. I'm still like a kid and have to disassemble everything new to me.:eg:
532nm mainly but whatever you have is fine. 405nm 650nm whatever!

I just can't bring myself to sacrifice a working laser:cryyy:

Any help will be appreciated.
:thanks:

There are many ways to learn it then do dissinsect them.
You see you'll have hard time finding some dead lasers because they can mainly be repaired, and if not you can use the host for a laser of your own.

A kind member here called Jayrob sells empty pen hosts, and you can buy green modules on O-like and assemble your own lasers.

Besides, who says that you have do "sacrifise" the working laser in order to find out what's inside?
They were assembled at some point - which means they can be disassembled. They are not magically carved out of unobtanium :D

If you want to find out what's inside a working green module, you can buy cheap 5mW green modules on DX for spare change, and they are made to be disassembled, you can unthread the lens barrel to see the crystals hovering above the diode.

Many ways to learn about lasers, my young :)D) friend!

Thanks Eudaimonium,

You don't know me and my dremel tool:eg:
I am not a kid by any stretch of the imagination, (I'm 48) but sometimes, careful disassembly/destruction can be more useful than just reading about something new to me.:D

I might just have to buy a few cheap greenies to disect. It just seems like such a waste considering what is likely to happen to them. Oh well, I guess the remaining parts will come in handy someday.

I just ordered a combo deal of a 532nm and 405nm from an epray seller. I wrote him to ask about any defective units he might sell and he made me a good price on them but he has never sent me an invoice.

I also intended to put them under a microscope to show the grandkids (and myself) what they look like up close and post the pics on the forum in case anyone else would be interested.
I have one of those Intel QX3 USB microscopes, and the kids are always wanting to see things up close and personal. It will magnify at 10X, 60X, and 200X. 200X is pushing the limits for the optics but it does work.

I showed them an eprom and they were amazed. To them, it looked like a city from above. It's neat to amaze the children. I'm trying to build some science interest into them at an early age like my Dad did for me. It was radio that hooked me into electronics but my interests branched out into several technical subjects.
My oldest grandaughter was fascinated by my cheap 532nm greenie as we were using it to point out stars. I think she was more interested in how the beam was a strait shaft of light spanning out into the sky. (me too:D)

Yes, I have been looking at the Jayrob kits, among others, and will probably go that route eventually.
As far as O-like, I'm worried about losing my items due to the Customs dept.
I know most don't get caught, but I also know my luck:cryyy:

Anyway...I'm really rambling now (it's a prerequisite for being an amature radio operator too)
Thanks for the reply.

Thanks Paul,
I've been reading the Sams Faq a little each day but there is so much info, it might take a while to digest it all.

Thanks again.

Haha, the "young" was a joke, what I meant was : y'all wanna be kids... I am one :p

Might be too tough to get that one though, but OK . I know you are older than me, it says in your profile , 30+ years of experience.
I only have 18 years of experience in breathing. I think I got the hang of it

If you really must take stuff apart, then as I said, warmly reccomend DX cheap modules , here:
DealExtreme: $7.29 5mW 532nm Green Laser Module (3V 11.9mm)

You can see that the brass barrel can be taken apart in three.
Top part containts the final collimation lens, middle part contains the expander lens, and bottom part has the diode pressfited in there and crystal glued above it. I can take some macro pictures of how that looks like but I don't think it'll stop you from buying it anyway, so I won't ruin the pleasure :p

Might be worth sending you some old stuff, just to see the microscope pics!

Wonder what the vanadate/doubling crystals on a greenie, or a de-canned 445 or 12x would look like at 200x?

How much was the USB powered microscope you spoke about & where did you purchase it from ? I've been wanting to get something similar to that. So, if you don't mind, could you provide the info. for me, PLEASE. BTW, EUDAIMONIUM & PAUL BLUESKY are both GREAT GUYS. Very helpful & honest. I've had dealings with both gentleman, & was ALWAYS pleased with transactions, Info. ETC.

I did not get to go to my eprom

my edate cancelled on me at the last eminute

Is an 'eprom' a 'virtual event' you just watch it in your boxers on your monitor??

Thanks to everyone for the kind offers!
I should have enough laser parts/pieces coming now to keep me going for a while.

The microscope I have is an old Intel QX3. Unfortunately, it won't work with my new laptop running Vista home 64bit. I got a couple of these a few Xmas's ago. I gave one to the grandkids and kept one for myself.

Guess I will have to fire up the old XP machine to do anything with it.
:thanks: to Himnl9 for providing the link to a USB microscope. I didn't even know anyone else was making them.

:D Len! Eprom=good geeky pun. Good one for electronics type people. I will have to remember that one!
I come up with word puns all the time. Just ask my grandkids. I drive them nuts sometimes.
Not really a word pun but, my grandaughter told me she went to a cheerleader banquet. I kept asking her about the chili eater banquet. Stupid, I know, but I enjoyed repeating it to her, over and over, whenever I could.:rolleyes:Much to her dismay. ( she's 12)

As far as the new avatar goes...I was afraid someone might take offense.
It's not really BAD in my opinion but I was worried someone might get upset.
I think it's a funny play on words. Guess I will change it and see:eg:

:thanks:Thanks again to everyone:thanks:

Just so long as you didn't "REPEAT" it as much as the chili "REPEATED" on her :na: (not a pun, but I thought it was kinda comical)-----rob
