Billiam, if you find a build, let me know. Sure, they're illegal...but screw the FCC! They're beholden to the phone companies anyway!

I want a portable EMP burst device to take into restaurants when I'm out with my gal...people today are ridiculous in restaurants!

Splinter Cell reference? Just make sure you have a shielded bag so you dont fry your stuff and lasers. :p

Whatever you do make sure you spend a good chunk of money and buy quality. I bought a $35 one and its effective range was crazy low. Like could block older signals types and 5 feet and G3 at 1 foot.

I don't want it to screw other people over... It's just at my own home when my kids won't get off there damn phones!
Did you try dx? They sell quite a number of those.
None of which they'll ship to Australia. There's a few schematic's online that have promising results but I'm not that electronically savvy to build something, That's out of my reach.

Ok, so maybe I was a little aggro before I had my coffee...I just hate being in a restaurant w/ everyone on their phones.

I've had too many dreams about EMP devices in BestBuys...

Well, if you need it badly, and really can't find any alternatives, I suppose you could try asking another member around to help ship it to you after buying from dx. It'll be an extremely long wait though....

Wish that could happen man.... but I tried calculating the energy required to create a man-pack portable EMP system that could take out ONE small handheld electronic device by placing a loop of wire around it and discharging... The energy needed just for that is equivalent to a car battery. And that's just to use the device ONCE.:eg:

I can't imagine how much energy you'll need for an entire restaurant size....

I wouldn't mind getting one... would be nice to be able to flip a switch and turn off cell phones within say a 5-8 foot range - enough to turn off cell phones in the car, or at a dinner table.

When did it suddenly become 100% ok to stop dead in the middle of a conversation to pick up the phone, or reply to a message that comes in?

Would be so much easier to just have a dead zone on demand. Would be lovely if theaters could have these as well...

i like the jammer idea but don't at the same time. this would be an example of why i don't like them. Ok so my daughter is only 5 but has a very bad nut allergy, so say i got my mother or parent in law's or anyone i trust to watch the kids well i take the wife out to dinner and im sitting at dinner someone is jamming my cell phone, and say she has a reaction to something that doesn't have peanut but may have came in contact with a tree nut at some point, and she goes into shock. well everyone that ever cares for her know about the allergy and how to use the Epipen but say they are trying to call to have use met them at the hospital but i don't get the message till an hour later when i leave the restaurant. I would be pissed, and probably make the person with the jammer eat that damn thing then beat the living crap out of them for missing an important phone call. this would be a reason why i don't like them.

So when all is said and done, in your convoluted example... the hypothetical end result is that your daughter is still under the care of someone who is aware of her allergies, knows how to get her to use an epi pen (not exactly rocket science) and gets them to the hospital?

The only consequence being that instead of having you scream and bug the caretaker, they can actually focus on what's important... your daughter, not on keeping you informed.

I understand where you're coming from perfectly, and there is nothing wrong with it, in fact if you were not obsessed with your kids safety that would be the weirder thing to me.

We are a little less than rational when it comes to being in constant contact though ( - I'm guilty of this too... I check my email at least 100 times per day for example). Being disconnected from time to time is good, and the world really doesn't end.

I think you mean power not energy and lead ;) or car batteries have a bad power density compared to electrolitic capacitors.
I actually builded an EMP that was able to knock out a old calculator from one meter with a capacitor from my coilgun and a big copper loop
