Thanks Jake!

I don't want one with the lasers built in, just the motors, potentiometers, mirrors

And amazon doesn't work in Australia

But thanks for helping :) I appreciate it

OKay bro
do this- visit any thrift -used etc shop- take along some batteries.
look thru their toys for a WIRED RC toy- inside there will be( in most) two motors-- with the remote you should be able to run both- change the speeds and maybe even the direction-be sure all of it works (use the batt you brought)so you only need to take all out, mount on a board, then glue two mirrors to plastic gears- that fit on the motor shafts--they are everywhere- dont worry about the angle of the mirrors- its nearly impossible to have them come out TOO flat.

all these motors and the laser need to be as close together as possible- you want the smaller mirror first then if the other is bigger or less flat that one goes second. For VERY short runs you can use a pointer with the button held down( wooden clothespin can work)-- if your mirrors are NOT Front surfaced you will see a fainter ghost image created by the front of the glass and a better one bouncing from the coating on the backside- just like the rearview mirror in your car- when you flip it at night you not longer see the headlights from the car behind you as brightly- its fainter because its coming from the glass and NOT the mirror side.
If your car mirror was FS that would not work.

If you happen upon a Poliroid plastic One-step camera buy it if its around $1- there is a 3vdc motor inside and a keystone shaped thin FS mirror that can be cut into smaller squares with glass cutting tool an practice. remember the first motot/mirror can be very tiny- needs only to be a little bigger than the laser spot(center it as you go)

Use two RC set ups for a more complex 4 motor spiro-

- did you search this forum for all of this-???-

I have made this post many times before..
dont buy a spiro... build one yrself- you will enjoy it more and have fun building it--

add more lasers for more colors like those under 'Flaminpyro's' posts--- you just use knife edging to get the spots close together.

If your circles go off the mirrors edges you have them too far apart or too small sized mirrors.or both. using my RC toy 'trick' avoids pots, DPDT switches, and motors and wiring-too. this can also be done with wireless RC stuff.

JUST dont forget to rest your lasers- spiros can make you forget that.

GL

you are on your own at this point- take pics and make a thread as you go.

do a search before you do anything else (ever)---len

I have several of the Spirograph toys with motors and mirrors, and such. Some identical to those for sale on Amazon.

I can sell and ship you one, if you're interested. At cost.

Jaycar sells a spirograph kit for like $40, or is that the one you were referring to in your original post? Soldering is an invaluable skill in the laser hobby, and you need to be pretty quick at it to avoid frying diodes.

Correct! That's the exact one I brought :(

After I finish building it I believed it worked for about 2-3 minutes (testing connection) then when I finished soldering I killed it.

I've always had a very keen Interest and passion in electronics/building when I was a lot younger I always use to pull stuff apart and put it back together to see how it worked, and then when I first seen a laser pointer when I was about 11 I have been so addicted to them they just amaze me at how beautiful and powerful they can be and now at this age (20) I've started to fulfil my passion with lasers by actually purchasing some high quality/high powered lasers, I would build my own but I've always had a problem with soldering.

I guess it's not my strong poiny and as always safety has been my number 1 priority when it comes to lasers after all you only 1 pair of eyes!

Soldering is just something, as with most things, that take practice and practice to get right. I'm 19 now and started soldering at around age 7, and even in that relatively short amount of time, you can become very efficient at it. Just takes practice and practice, and it pays off, I can solder a 28 pin DIP device in about 5 seconds flat :)

In fact, maybe you could even look at the kit as a goal to learn soldering, grab yourself some perfboard and a few basic components and try soldering them up, and move onto the kit when you feel comfortable. It's actually quite difficult to kill electronics by soldering unless you're doing something very wrong, like using pipe brazing solder, or using an iron that's too hot etc.

If you're really not keen on trying the kit again, your best bet is probably to get something like pschlosser posted above and just remove the laser, and replace it with your own. You can pick those up for a couple bucks on eBay, sometimes they go under the name "laser crab"

Something like this:

here is one than can be shipped to Oz
they are red laser two motor spiros
modes include manual and auto.
you can control both the direction and speed
its may be possible to harvest the parts and combine to make a 4 motor and I have one that a friend took one apart and swapped the red for a blue laser.

Pocket Laser Light Show Hand Held Party Light New Boxed | eBay
and another
Pocket Laser Light Show Hand Held Red Laser Projecting Patern Gadget | eBay
and one more
Pocket Laser Light Show Hand Held Party Light for Disco | eBay

these are AFAIK made in China so you may find them cheaper from China

Here is the spiro mod done by Luke as a personal favor- its a A-130 diode barely at lasing threshold- if fact it is pulsed at its present current-
I never did mod the PowerRangers gun-- started it and have a good idea how to finish ...but someday...
