I would prefer to just buy the Alpha at $100 if it was available. What does the $200 extra get me?

That gets you the base unit, which is capable of graphing, and connecting to a PC to be able to graph on a PC.
It also gives you a set of batteries and charger and a USB cable to pair your meter to the PC.
Essentially it would be this without the sensor on the side and instead would have the sensor from the alpha.
