That last time I looked into this, the price tag was nearly $5,000 for a portable 488nm.

It's a very expensive diode to buy at the moment, and for the most part, you'll only find it integrated into some sort of "value added" component (typically a lab laser). You CAN buy the bare diode, but even that is in the $4,000+ range.

Short of that, I think you're stuck with Argon or OPSL, neither of which have (to my knowledge) been portable-ized.

You can hold any of my argon lasers in your hand.

One of them even has a handle

Of course you will have to drag the PSU and power cord behind you

Oh yeah -- and your arm/hand will probably get tired very quickly

Peace,
dave

Dave, that's the old-fashioned approach

The modern solution is to get a 2 mile fiber optic cable, and just leave the bulky laser+PSU at home

how efficient are the 488 dpss crystals?
are they sensitive to moisture like LBO?
what pump crystals and diode are in the process?
i will try to attempt to make my own if alignment of the crystals are like the 532nm.

are your argon ion lasers soft sealed?
also, do they tend to break during shipping?
if they don't then i might be looking into one of those.

Thought about that with the backpack idea, but then you should get the LaserPhysics argons that are a single unit w/fan.
