Hello all,

Instead of cluttering other threads with my searches and questions, I thought it best to organize it all into one. I have been out of the game a while, but am looking to pick up a couple new toys - it seems there have been some changes while I was gone (bye, Joker301) and some new tech to the market - so I have been attempting to read through what's new and coming up. Questions, questions... So here's what I am in search of:

First and foremost, my priority is visibility. That wow factor. Brightness, color saturation, beam quality, etc. I am looking for the best possible human visibility for the buck. As I mentioned in another thread, I'd gladly take a lower raw power output if it meant a brighter or better light. Second to that is host appearance. I loved my old Lazerer Rifle, that was one of the best looking hosts I've seen, in my opinion. I like the look of the SX4 host too. Of course, I can overlook host design for the right laser...it would just be an added plus to be able to get turned on when the laser is turned off ;)

I have owned both 445s and 532s previously, when I first got into the hobby. Loved those and the color. I can say that I am looking for those wavelengths again, but I am open to other wavelengths in that color spectrum if you can convince me why I would choose 450 over 445 or 520 over 532, etc. The reason I state these wavelengths is that the more unique wavelengths are much more expensive for less wow factor. I am open to buying an assembled laser, having one of the reputable members here do a build for me, or even assembling a build myself with the right guidance if it saves a good chunk of change. I have had good luck here at LPF both with manufactured purchases and member builds. I'm not looking to spend a ridiculous amount of money, but not cheaping out necessarily. Let's say up to $400.

I have been looking around at various builds, but can't narrow down exactly what's best for what I'm looking for. Heard a lot about the NUBM44 and the outrageous power it makes, which sounds like it's gorgeous and extremely visible, but also have been told that the divergence you get with that power makes the visibility less spectacular than you would think (when I refer to visibility, I mean brightness, color, saturation, beam quality, etc.). I am not all that knowledgeable when it comes to DPSS vs standard or what's the best to go with.

I am a month or two away from making a purchase, but I wanted to go ahead and narrow down exactly what I want, and also see what the community is like these days. Hopefully if there are still users on these boards that do high quality builds, they will speak up. Gotta keep it in the family :)

If you have anything you're looking to sell, are interested in doing a build for me, or have any advice/input, I welcome you to throw it out there for me - it never hurts.

If you want a ridiculously high power 532, no ifs, ands, or buts, go with XPL. They've got a 1.5W 532 (which gets close to 2W) - and in about a month, or less, they'll have a new host out. They also have a 15% discount for forum members, if you contact the company owner! Best of all, it's under $400. You should wait for the new host, though - it is focusable and has loads of features. :)

They may have the power initially, but the duty cycle is limited because they don't heat sink and don't control the temperature of the crystals either. For the money, you might be happier with a 520 multi-mode diode. The divergence is similar to the M140 or the 3 watt 9mm diode. Depending on what you want to spend you can get between just under a watt up to 1.4 watts. Because 520nm is so much more visible to our eyes than the 445nm diodes, these would be much brighter than what you were used to.

I am hoping to have 2 maglite builds done in next couple months... one is in progress NUBM44 @ 4.5a I think they estimate 6-7w output with that..

And then I wanna do a NDG7475 1w 520nm build in a maglite after I finish my m44 build.. these two may not have the best beam/dot chacteristics but the light/color they put out is amazing in photos I've seen..

The builds can be done in mags cheap with a higher duty cycle then most any host we have access to because of the mass it can hold in the head for heatsinking. Goodluck!

Mmm..those diodes are really on my mind for my blue. Still unconvinced that the divergence is worth the power! Do you like using maglites as hosts? I am not a fan of them at all just on the aesthetic side, but I do see how they'd be easy and safe to work with...

The new host seems to be tightly under wraps for now. I've been contacting Peng (the owner) through Aliexpress every 3 days or so. He responds within 20 minutes, always. He says it'll take 14 more days to verify the new driver (which has to provide 7A!!!) and 10 days to manufacture the hosts. :)

I saw the NUBM07E on ArcticDude's thread in the Multimedia sections....damn that thing is gorgeous...how does it spec out compared to the 44?

That looks plenty bright with a gorgeous, saturated color. Beam looks tight as well. Makes me want to try a new wavelength! I'd pay for a build like that one.

You posted on my thread, and seem conflicted about the NUBM44. So as someone who just got the laser today, let me tell you about the divergence. It's pretty bad. I shined it across a parking lot up onto some tree's, probably around 50 yards and the "dot" was probably 3-5 feet across. However it was 2pm in full sunlight and I could see it no problem, pretty impressive for 450nm. Here is a picture of the beam

Note that this is with it focused to infinity. I have not tested it at night yet. I know you said burning stuff gets boring pretty quick, and I feel the same way. However it is worth noting that it can burn a granite tile, so it's got some serious burning power.
So yes the divergence is terrible, however it's the brightest freaking blue thing you will get right now so if that's what you want, this is where to go. It's also got a lot of that wow factor with people that haven't seen higher powered lasers due to it's immensely high power.

NUBM44

If you want the best of both worlds I would go with the NUBM07E with a beam expander, and you will have a beautiful blue, with a shit ton of power and good divergence. You could build it yourself so you can get exactly what you want, perhaps have a custom host machined for it so it has that Arctic look you said you liked and you can screw on and off the beam expander or even have it permanently integrated into the build. Mind you this will probably run you in the $400-$500 range for the entire build but that's just an estimate. If your just looking for a good beam though, go with a lower powered DPSS 532nm, maybe in the 100mW-200mW range and opt for quality. My 4mW Laserglow Anser is the best laser I've ever owned and also my favorite, I will probably never sell it. Just goes to show that quality>quantity.


Hope all goes well with your build, and if you do opt for that blue power, be safe, you only get one pair of seeing balls.

07e is close to 44s divergence. Check out DTRs 07e page, there is a picture comparing the 07 with the 41/44 at a distance. Personally I love the look of 465nm over 450nm, and if pushed hard the 07 can shift up closer to 470nm, I just picked an 07e up recently and am extremely satisfied, I'm happy that I went for a higher wavelength over the great burning abilities that the 41/44s have.

Yeah that beam expander is crazy isn't it?! I am very envious of his. I'm wanting pretty much exactly what he's got.

I just got a 6X cylindrical lens pair for a build with one of these diodes. Given what I've seen that may not be enough to get a beam that is not rectangular and may need to add another cylindrical lens to get there.

After all this input and reading some more, I'm leaning towards the 07E and the M462, moreso the M462. I've been told the M462 has way better specs when it comes to divergence and visibility, and is damn near the same color. I haven't had much luck in responses in the way of getting a build done for me, so I might have to build it myself. That would not be a problem, I have just never built a laser before and it would take some time and learning for me. Securing the right components and such.

If I cannot get anyone to offer a build or see anything come up here in B/S/T, I will start collecting the components I need. It seems that this hobby has gotten less populated over the last few years :( Which is sad because, well, frickin' lasers.

I suppose I'll start looking into hosts now, which also seems limited. I'm a huge fan of Glow In The Dark and the Survival Laser SX4, but I'll just have to see what's out there.

If you're looking for a cooler color the NDB7675 is supposedly slightly better than the M462. I have one at 1.8A and it's gorgeous. It's a pity that when I built it I didn't know the wavelength shifted that much at higher currents, else I'd have it at 2.4A instead.

I have an NDB7675 and am trying to figure out what current to set it to. DTR has them set at 1.8 A. 2.0 A, 2.2 A and 2.4 A. I was thinking of setting it to just over 2 amps, but I don't want to destroy the diode.

I have one unused here as well and I'm inclined to set it very high at 2.6 or 2.7A, which is supposed to be on the fold back region but gives a considerable wavelength boost. I've seen reports of them dying around 2.9A.

Agreed. Once I get a 7675 I will probably set the current very high. The question is whether or not the wavelength can be pushed higher than an 07E without risking the diode.
