Is anyone selling, or know where I can find, an aluminum sheet thats 300x300mm in size and at least 2.5mm thick minimum and 5mm thick maximum?

To save mistakes on my RGY project which could destroy the housing I am using (which happened to my version one 100mw red scanner) I am going to simply mount all the parts on a aluminum sheet thats the same size as the housing I will be building into, once all parts are fitted to it and lined up and such I can simply slot in into position in the housing. Not only will it save time and prevent mistakes but it will also act as an heat sink.

may wanna check mcmaster.com. There should be a raw materials -> metals -> aluminum section that has a lot of stuff for you. If you're only using 2.5mm thick aluminum though, I doubt you'll have anywhere near the rigidity needed - the sheet will bend under just the weight of the components and you'll lose alignment. You may want to consider shelling out for something a bit more sturdy like 10mm+.

This sheet isnt the base of the scanner. I already have found some housing thats made from rather thick aluminum, what I am going to do is mount the parts on the aluminum sheet and then just drop that flat into the bottom of the housing and screw it down.

It will prevent loads of screws showing through the bottom of the housing and will be as though the bottom of the housing has been thickened.

I found some on ebay now thats the exact size I need and is 1.7mm thick.
