Have you try using just two? 2 will give you over 7.2v that should be enought for Blu-Ray running only at 40mA.

Nope, you need at least 8v to run a bluray as you need at least 6 to run a red, of course that's assuming he's going to use DDL's driver.

according to the datasheet the VDrop is 1.6v running at 20~200mA at +50c. 7.2v-1.6v=5.6v, Blu-Ray running at 40mA only needs 4.5v.

Configured as a current regulator, you have the reference voltage (1.25V) to contend with also.. The total forward drop will be about 2.9V. So it's more like 7.2V-1.6V-1.25V=4.35V.

Bluray LDs need between 4.5 to 5v, even if the one jake's using needs 4.5v the LM317 still takes another 3v so you would need a minimum of 7.5v to power it.
