Ok there are lots of people selling BRs atm and its all very confusing especially for people like me with very little money...

What I'm after is simply a BR diode in an axis module (or equ) don't care how powerful but anything with a visible beam at night would be good so ~50mW (I know this can be done cheaply) with one of the $5 drivers or simela attached and nothing else needed.... except some wires from the driver...

whats the best price I can get and I'm looking for <$45 shipped and I know I can get it for $55

so what I want is prices for what I asked for and prices for lower powered BRs too...

cheers in advance ;)

Re: want best prices for a BR in module with a dri

the very cheapest this can be done would be:
the geeks.com HD-DVD drive: $20 + $10-$50 shipping = ~$35
DX aixiz clone: $5 + 1month wait = $5
rckstr driver: $7 + shipping = ~$10
1 hour labor: at least $10

total price: $60

your estimate of <$45 is a bit conservative.. anyone who sells you one that cheap is either ripping themselves off or they bought several of the drives and absorbed some of the shipping costs that way.
The lower powered diodes come from PS3 replacement lasers, which cost the same or more as these xbox ones.
I recently bought just the diode for $48 shipped and I think it was an alright deal... Good luck in getting something much cheaper, I think you may have to toss in a few more dollars onto your price estimate for it to be worth someone's time.

that 60 without labor isn't far from the truth unless you put in a used diode
but hey after its turned on once "its used"

I thought Hydro's offer was pretty decent :-? I bought two in fact! ...and that is despite the fact that I just ordered 4 of the Toshiba drives for harvesting from the geeks. You can't go wrong with a harvested diode, mounted in a module for $43 shipped. The hardest parts are done, and done correctly. Harvesting and remounting are two of the bigget potential areas for failure. "Ask me how I know this." ;D

One possible cheaper method is to order a HD DVD from computergeeks dot com using the promo code "DEALHUNTING" and depending on where you live, it could be as little as $22 shipped to your door. Order a aixis module for $3.90 from sk8er, build a driver or get a rockstar for cheap and viola. In business.

So long as you can do your own harvest, and re-mount of the diode to the Aixis module without killing the diode from crushing, or ESD. Remember - these gallium nitirde diodes HATE ESD! They are remarkably easy to 'kill' if you are not careful and taking ESD precautions (ESD mat, Wrist Band, ESD soldering station...)..

So yea, it is 'technically' possible to save a few bucks doing it yourself... but I wouldn't bet on it being 'the best option'... not when it's a matter of $15 or so, and your total project depends on a successful outsome. I guess from my standpoint, even on a very limited budget I'd save up a bit more (let's face it, even if you are broke, $15-20 will not make or break the project - and if it will - you should not be playing with these in the first place...).

What I am saying is - if you lack equipment and expertise, get one read-made. Save yourself the money and headache.
