While looking myself, I've found that the seemingly hardware-store-standard 40W soldering iron has been the bane of my existence. I've been on the lookout for a low power or variable power soldering iron, those diodes don't get like getting too toasty. Luckily I live close (enough) to the actual store to where I can just buy one, but for those that are interested, I thought I would share the link were you can buy it online. I know there are others to be had, but this one seemed cheaper than most.

Anyway, best of luck, and I hope someone might use this link someday/ :yh:

Hate to burst your bubble, but what you should be really looking for an adjustable soldering iron is temperature adjustment, not wattage. Yes, there's a link between the wattage and the temperature, but that iron just has a dial that goes from zero to max, with no indication of what temperature the iron will be regulated to. You'll probably end up leaving it at max anyway.

You can also get that iron $5 cheaper at other stores like Amazon.com/Parts Express compared to ASS. Even so, I'd save your money for a better quality soldering iron rather than a cheap one you'll probably end up replacing for the one you really wanted, and has only marginal utility over a regular non-adjustable iron. For an iron that you won't need to replace for a long time, they're really not that much more expensive (ex1, ex2).

Thanks for the links, looks like some useful tools. I was just pointing out something else I wandered across, but hopefully the links here can help someone if they happen to be looking.

No problem, I hoped it would get someone on the right track. Thanks again to BB for posting additional links, if anyone has other links that might be helpful for people looking for soldering irons, please share. :)
