OK. I was finally able to deal with the calorimeter issue for this power meter. It was worth the wait. It cost me a bit more, but it is niiiiiicce.

Up for sale I have a Scientech 364 power and energy meter with a Scientech 38-1UV5 calorimeter. This unit ended up nicer than the 362 I just sold (of course it's a bit more costly as well). The meter alone (no calorimeter) lists for $500 in the used equipment lists. This one's going to go for $250 shipped in the US. Foreign buyers will pay more for shipping. If you use PayPal add $10 for PayPal fees. Or we can use Google checkout.

The 364 is for more powerful lasers. It's range settings are .3W, 1W, 3W, 10W, 30,W, & 100W. Yes folks those are capital W's. If most of your lasers are below 20mW, you should probably pass this one up. This unit is for the big boys or girls. The unit is clean and operates smoothly.

The 38-1UV5 calorimeter is an "Ultra Absorbing" head. It is a "volume absorbing" type as opposed to a "surface absorbing" type. It is matched nicely with this energy meter. The 38-1UV5 measures from 1mW to 10W, so you are probably safe with your lasers

You should be able to tell from the last two pictures why I recommended against purchasing this if you only have smaller lasers. The needle doesn't swing much when you're only moving it 1% of the arc

Actually, I think this turned out fine for me taking the first unit. I wanted to be able to measure low powers too as being able to test things like 5mW yellow pens would be essential to me perchasing one. It's only been a couple of days so it's still on it's way here, but I'll make sure to post up when it does!

Yeah. The 362's lowest range is .001mW. It will measure the heat from your hand! This one WILL measure 5mW. The only challenge is that it only moves the needle one line on the .3W scale. It certainly works for as low as 5mW, but you don't get the satisfaction of watching the needle swing up to the measured power.

Yours also has the 360001 calorimeter. The 360001 is a surface absorbing type. It is more sensitive to the temperature in the room, air currents, and heat from objects in proximity. The 38-1UV5 is a volume absorbing type calorimeter. They are more stable with their measurements. The surface absorbing type are known to cause the meter to swing past the true measurement (and so certain laser companies can claim huge mW outputs that only last a second ). This volume absorbing type swing up near the power output and then "slide" into the final power reading.

Tracking on your unit still reports that it left Los Angeles at 10:54pm on the 24th. It should be in the country today or tomorrow.

I guess the Calorimeter is the trade of, but with good condtitions, it should be possible to get a nice stable reading.  One other thing I thought was important was to see the minute fluctuations in power under different temperatures, as I already own a blue and they're incredibly sensetive.  But yeah, it'll deffinately make my time buying lasers a hell of a lot easier as I doubt I'll ever own anything higher than 500mW anyway.  



Edit: Also, it doesn't mean I can't buy my self a new calorimeter in the future...

Don't get me wrong. The surface absorbing type calorimeter is wonderful and the 360001 is a great match with your 362. Some of the "big dogs" in this group use them. Just don't trust the brief "peak" you sometimes get from this combination. I can't imagine that you will EVER outgrow the unit you purchased. You may decide that you WANT something zexier, but you won't NEED anything zexier.

I remember watching the needle in awe when I first measured my 2mW Xerex with that meter set at .1. The 593.5nm is so unstable that the needle looked like it was monitoring the audio levels in a music video! ;D ;D ;D
