Another hobbyist struck by the $40 dilda-laser. I stopped selling red lasers awhile ago. People know that they can get a "burner" for $40 now. It is difficult to sell any red laser now. I sell some modules at virtual cost, just to keep from wasting the diodes. The only red lasers I sell are part of a matched set. Even then the red laser is offered for cost as an added incenive to buy the pair.

$225 for a 6X laser (dorcy Jr.)
$300 for a matched set

The red laser costs me $70 in parts alone!

Based on free advice and market realities, I am dropping the price of this laser further to $60. [highlight]Why buy this instead of a $40 dilda from DX??? [/highlight] Well...

*better build - made in the USA by a hobbyist who takes pride in his work

*more power - get 230mW for sure, instead of hoping your dilda is up to 200mW spec

*heatsink - this Dorcy build has a custom heatsink - natural laser enhancement, last longer with no pills ;)

*customs - in the US? why worry and wait weeks? you'll have this in a few days with no risk of losing it to customs

Is all this, and two quality batteries, worth $19? You decide. I will leave this up for a day or two, then it goes back in my pocket or to Ebay.

um....
i may be wrong, but my 240mW red will instantly light a red match.....there is no way it takes 20 seconds if this thing really is 230mW, maybe you should send it to someone to have it measured?

In response to others talking about burning powers: How a laser burns matches shouldn't be used a way to compare powers...different matches will react differently. My DX200 red can light my red and white matches instantly, yet I have trouble lighting a certain type of blue match with it. Certain brands of matches will light MUCH easier than other brands, the chemistry of the matches does have an impact. Just because your 200mW lights a red colored matches doesn't necessarily mean another guys 300mW laser can light a different white match.

i'd say regardless of what brand the match is, if the laser is 230mw is should have no trouble at all lighting a red match.

You would think so, but even at 240mW the color of the match matters as can the brand (due to chemical makeup). Also, if the person doing the measurement has trouble holding the laser still enough then the match may not light up as fast.. There are too many factors involved for a person to use match-lighting time as a good indicator of laser power. If you claim 230mW, you really should have a meter reading to back it up...

I agree, and wish I had a meter reading.

It seems that the various diodes used around here are well known enough to infer the power of the laser from the current applied and the diode type. For example a 20x long open can diode at 400ma would probably give power between x and y mW (I have no idea what x and y would be). Experts, any truth to this?

its the stock driver from the dorcy jr and a lpc-815 diode just to help out

i have a dorcy jr from way back when that kenom built me.... and its still going strong and that does not have a flexdrive in it  :cool:

EDIT: if u can find me a flexdrive available (ready to ship) let me no ill buy 5 of them ;)

i read that the stock driver is 400 some thing ma that's perfect for a open can diode ;)

It varies greatly! I take them out and save them for testing.
A lot output anywhere from 500mA to 600mA. Very few output less than 450mA...
Plus, the voltage spike can kill the diode. That is basically the purpose of it.
