I have a Cree SH-032 2.6W 445nm Handheld w/ 18650 & single battery AC Charger & a pair of laser protective goggles. Starts at 2.75W and at warm up stays around 2.6W. Uses boost drive , 9mm diode, copper heatsink, driver potted up in pill with arctic alumina 2 part thermal epoxy. Lens is DTR housing with 9mm diode lens. That is an awesome power in such a small laser. You will need a high quality 18650 for that laser. Good luck with the sale ! :beer:

I am supplying with a 5300mAh Battery. They are probably not 5.3Ah, but they are very good.

Is there a reason why the copper module is sticking out that far from the heatsink? At 2+ watts you're diode is at serious risk of overheating quickly, seems there's not enough contact between the module & aluminum sink :thinking:

For superior heat transfer the rear of the 9mm diode which MOST of the heat radiates from has been thermally potted to the inside of the heatsink. I have found that since the heatsink is enclosed and there is a thermal air gap in between the heatsink and the inside of the host, there is not good heat transfer for the heatsink and diode assembly., Leaving the copper heatsink out a bit allows for a bit more passive cooling anlong with larger brass lens.

What driver are you using?
Sorry, should have mentioned it... I'm using a
FMT V2 buck/boost driver with 2 resistors changed to .510 Ohms. Output is 1.92A..Driving the diode at 2.85W before lens. Additionally, the threaded pill from Jayrobs build has the Spring contact on one side, cavity filled with thermally conductive epoxy and the round driver seated on top of the 9mm thick filling of epoxy. The driver is below the top of the threaded pill giving a great heatsink area (since the bottom of the driver is aluminum) Laser is case negative..

I understand, but I do not agree with you. I'm not trying to argue or troll so please dont take my opinion that way, but allow me to explain & feel free to correct me or disagree ;)

The copper module itself acts as your primary heatsink enclosed within the aluminum heatsink that I'll call your secondary heatsink for this explanation. When the copper absorbs the heat from the 9mm you want as much contact as possible with the secondary heatsink for maximum heat transfer away from the diode. The less contact you have between each sink, the less heat dissapation will occur. In my opinion, the front of the module sticking out doesn't transfer heat anywhere so it remains hot while the back of the module obviously passes the heat. Airing it doesn't dissipate heat nearly as effective as direct contact, unless you have a fan blowing cool air on it. The fact that it's a copper module also means it holds heat much longer because of it's density - making direct contact twice as important as if you were using a regular module.

Again this is just my opinion and I dont aim to hinder your sale, I just find it odd that this method is being used with such a powerful laser & a 9mm diode :beer:

Nope, I partially agree with you. But you have to understand that 90% of the excess or any thermal loss through any diode is through the rear. I can move it back and epoxy the copper TO the heatsink. I have a few of the heatsinks left. Either way, I understand thermal conductivity, I'm not a PhD, only a humble EE. I know you are voicing experience, I always appreciate input, always !!

Changed it. Checked it.. Seems like heat exchange is same.. Does look better flush though!!:D

Yes I see what you're saying about the back of the module & you indeed are correct about the source of heat transfer. I didn't mean for you to consider changing your build but I honestly see it as an improvement & I too think it looks better mounted flush :D

I'm sure you'll have no problem selling this laser, the SS SH-032 is one of my personal favorite hosts & pushing 2.6W through one of these is just massive!! Great job man & good luck with the sale :beer:
