Crap, sure hope I didn't start all this mess

I know Opto is a reseller. John Lawson said something about this thread being not cool to Optotronics and then changed it to a :-X.

>500mW... maybe not ;D But Igor started with >70mW Blu-Rays and now he can get a 147mW out of the diode! (not safe current most probably) So now I'm getting a 100mW for the same price he promised me a 70mW for! =D

I think Pseudo's idea is fantastic! How generous to take a reasonable deposit for those who can't afford at the time  ;). Now That's customer service! ;D Anyway I would be game but I'm happy with my current collection, just thinking about getting a x-100.

The reason why I like to spend a little more is because you pay for more then just the laser, you pay for the security of knowing your money isn't going down the toilet. Fast shipping, honest answers, excellent products, warranty, etc., to limit doubt or regret for buying an expensive devise. Anyway, I would NEVER buy any single item from DX over $200 (and that's pushing it). I love DX for their cheap low powered lasers and other (less then $200) extreme deals, but I would never risk my money knowing their under qualified (IMO) procedures (for expensive devises).

Not to relight an extinguished fire, but, all I have to say is that if someone uses the term "RPL" as the title of their thread and "optrotronics" are brought up as examples, then Jack should be entitled to say what ever he wishes, IMO.

See what I mean? I fear the result of "price" becoming the main factor in the decision to buy a laser. However, we are bringing it on ourselves. Just look at the glut of people looking to "buy" at the lowest price possible and the number of people looking to sell components and units for a quick couple of bucks in their pocket. We are being too successful at promoting our hobby. Instead of finding and encouraging enthusiasts, we are spawning customers, looking for a deal.

I have seen the enemy and he is us

Peace,
dave

I had to respond to an email today from someone wanting a 150mW Viasho portable. He goes on to ask if there is any way I can offer him a better deal. What?!? I told him the only way he could get a better deal is to buy without the case. Our pricing is not on our website as a starting point for negotiations for one cheap laser system. This is why we do not specifically sell to hobbyists. If someone orders a system and pays for a system we don't always know if they are an enthusiast but we have big organizations, such as NASA, UK MoD, US Navy and others who demand our time. They buy from us not because we are a reseller but because of the value added engineering services that are applied to those laser systems. I'm sorry but unless you are buying multiple systems there are no discounts.

When we get overstock, like the 100mW portables we ended up with, we have no problem clearing our inventory at fantastic prices. We simply have no need to warehouse portables. These are few and far between but you guys are the first to know.

Now with that said, one thing I do enjoy providing hobbyists is safety equipment. I do this because there is a distinct lack of concern for laser safety in the hobby. I try to educate people in laser safety. I will bend over backwards to make sure you have the proper eye protection for whatever laser system you may own.

Competition between hobby resellers is fierce. We've all seen many little laser company startups disappear overnight due to competition and poor business practices. Those that survive have to play keep up with the Jones' as prices and margins keep falling. That's not the environment we like. We prefer to make the market, not react to it.

<1000mW meaning it could be anything less than 1000mW eg 5mW ;)
