Hey Dave,
Since the normal safe operating current is 7A and the PSU can only supply 10.5A I decided to redesign the remote schematic. I have implemented a switch that allows for continuous variable current control or a fixed current level - set at 7A. The variable control tops off at a little under one amp less than the maximum the PSU can deliver, for tube safety and longevity. I decided to leave out the DPDT switch feature that allows for an optical feedback based power control, as I have no desire for it, but it can easily be implemented as in the original feedback. I simply jumpered the connection that normally switches between "light mode" and "current mode" into the current position. Total current draw from the 15V pin is kept to under 15mA, well within the 20mA specification of the manual.

I will for sure be using this set up when the laser arrives, so that will be the first official test, but I see no reason why it would malfunction. It is essentially identical to the schematic on LASERFAQ.

By the way, there is an error on the LASERFAQ page for this remote; the ascii schematic shows a 1.5k ohm potentiometer and a 1k resistor. If this is used the pot will allow adjustment up to a potential of ~18amps, not the normal 12A that having a 1.5k resistor and 1k pot allows. The verbal description is correct, but the resistances in the drawing are reversed. I nearly ordered the wrong size pot as a result. If I had not asked you about nominal operating currents and then decided to redesign the remote to change the operating range and function I would not have caught the error.

Please feel free to use this schematic wherever you would like in the future. A (truly) small token of my thanks. Hopefully it helps others.

VERY COOL! :thanks:

dave

Next is a "plug-n-play" 145mW Multi-Line argon laser
I have included an external rheostat to give the laser current control
It is showing all of the normal six color lines

question: "external rheostat" - you mean one of those large wire wound potentiometers that is usually in a metal case with a big knob that is used to adjust the mains supply... or the small pot sticking out the back of the power supply? i would take it to mean the former but i don't think those PSUs can work with a rheostat.

It doesn't have to big one of those big honking wire wound rheostats. I baby carbon one works just fine. Like this one on a bare bones remote.

In this picture the "remote" (current control) is attached to the Amphenol connector. You can easily see it in the picture because the only 1.5 inch shrink tube that Fry's had was green ;)

Hey Dave!

I got the argon in the mail today and boy is she a beaut! I have her idling right now with jumpers in the connector. How nice of you to include in a male DB25 headder, thanks! I thought it was just the bare female recepticle in the photos. I was quite amazed to see 8 lines at idle! Holy cow this is a sweet tube. Oh and the fan is so quiet! Super happy right now.

I hope to build the remote this weekend, so then we'll see some real power.

By the way, you use the strangest styrofoam packing I have ever seen. Very cool though.

I am able to remove the space heater from my office now, haha! I just run the argon and my room warms up!

Thanks for letting me know.
I had a couple of the connectors sitting on the shelf

Yeah. Those fans are very high quality. Unfortunately, most people in the US don't want to mess with 220V :(

I hope to build the remote this weekend, so then we'll see some real power.

Remember, WE LOVE PICTURES!

IIRC I bought that at an office supply store somewhere in Northern Califorinia last year. I had to ship something while I was on the road. I don't recall seeing it down here anywhere. It comes in a "block" all fitted together. You break it apart for use. I've still got about 25% of it left. The little block went a long way

I am able to remove the space heater from my office now, haha! I just run the argon and my room warms up!

I have always threatened to run a duct to the outside when running argon lasers. By the time I do maintenance burns on 6-8 lasers here every month, the house is quite warm :eg:

Have fun with it

Good luck with the sale

Thanks.
I do not sell all the time
I usually only sell stuff when parts have started to build up.
I buy stuff when it is cheaper and or to help out other members
Then I sell at almost cost
This is NOT my day job
This is a hobby
If I can get the hobby to help pay for itself and help members get something cheaper, I'm all over it :D

Yes I understand :)

This is a hobby for me too. I have my own job aside of selling lasers. I just found a way to enjoy and earn some money my-self.
