This thread is NOT for feedback or disputes.
Any of these types of posts will be deleted.
We have a full board for those threads.
If you have other suggestions about how to avoid getting scammed, those posts are welcomed here

Before you decide to send money to someone, check them out.

You can read any reputation comments they have by clicking on their name and then going to their profile

You can read about any previous sales and/or problems with them in the Feedback board:
Trades, Feedback, & Dispute Resolutions

If there is any doubt, ask about them in the thread.

Finally, you can request to use a "middleman." When using a middleman, they send the item to the middleman. The middleman evaluates the item and informs both parties. If everything is fine, you THEN send the money to the seller. Once the seller notifies the middleman that he has received payment, then the middle man sends the item to you. All you pay for is the one extra shipping charge to the middle man and the shipping charge to you

Peace,
dave

I'd suggest publicly asking other members' dealings of the seller on the sale thread, if they aren't looking to scam, they shouldn't take offense.

Granted. Not everyone who scams starts out being a scammer. Someone has to be the first. One cannot ever be 100% protected. However, by doing what is suggested in this thread, you MAY avoid being the first and you can avoid being the second.

I suggest that you check out anyone offering to be the middleman as well ;)

Peace,
dave

You should put in a note about NEVER EVER sending the payment as a gift or money owed. We don't want a repeat of the adam incident.

On another forum I used to frequent, members could eventually earn the title "Trusted Trader." Perhaps something like that based on their trade reputation (not the number...) or a list of people who can be trusted as middlemen would be applicable?

Also, when funding a paypal transaction, NEVER use your bank. Always fund the transaction with a credit card which will give you the power of the fair credit billing act. You can dispute charges when you do not receive the goods or if they arrive in a condition other than what was agreed upon. Incidentally, this applies across the board in life, not just at LPF. You should always use a credit card instead of cash when making large purchases. That way, you will always be in control if there is a problem with the merchandise. If you properly file a dispute, your credit card company will return your money until the dispute is resolved. I hope that this helps. Bill

I just randomly offered to be a middleman the other day for a 1W 445nm Muahahahaha
I had my motives...I've never seen one in person :D

Middle men really are the best course of action as Pay pal does not always protect you. They just have to mail you an empty box with delivery confirmation and you lose all your money.
Although it is "possible" to be scammed by the middle man, that is something that should never happen. The person chosen is usually a long time member and very trusted person (like Dave) and protects both party's interests.

It's a very good idea to READ their reputation feedback as well. Just because they have positive reputation, doesn't mean they are trustworthy. "cool post" "nice avatar" and "that's what she said" may add some points to their reputation but does not make them any more trustworthy.

There seems to be a new scammer in the BST section of the forum every day. So the extra $5 and day or two shipping time to use a middle man is much worth it.

@twhite - That's a very good idea. I like it.

Thanks a lot for this info.
The middleman is always welcome coz he/she is obliged to take the risk of trusting and helping both parties during the transaction.:gh:

I think that should be defined middleman for every country
for example:
Daguin - United States
someothermember - United Kingdom
Me - South America :)
or more members per country. I say per country because shipping gets expensive if someone eg send a laser from US to middle man in UK, and the laser goes from middleman to UK to receiver in US.
just an idea. :)

paypal Buyer protection anyone?
Dont send the money as a gift because paypal would tell you to f##k off after complaining the "Gift" you sent was actually a payment for an item that broke.
Please use personal edowed payment that way you simply click resolution centre and escalate the problem to paypal claim and an actual human being will review the case and simply refund you.

you must return the item and get it tracked because thats how paypal know the 1st party has recieved the item back and then owes you a refund if not the buyer can have his $100 laser and $100 and claim not to have the laser. If its tracked paypal check the tracking number to see if they have recieved it and then - no questions asked - refund you.
