Default Price Quote: Blue Ray 4x & 6x

Where the cheapest I can get a blue ray 4x or 6x diode and what kind of prices should I be looking at? I am going to build a blue ray laby between the powers of 150 and 250mW.

I'd be really surprised if you can build a 6 X labby or anything else involving a "REAL"6 X diode, unless some kind soul sells you one they have stashed. As for the 4 X, you'll get about the same results using a PHR. If I'm incorrect, anyone can step in & straighten me out, I won't mind. .............rob

Nailed it, Rob

There was a thread here a week or two ago that *Spammer* was offering original 6X sleds for $120 plus shipping, but it looks like they were snapped up immediately, the 4X are out there but as Rob said, the testing has shown them to be a marginally better diode than the PHR (at best)... And BTW, the 6X is really only run safely around 200-210mW to ensure longevity.

Susie at O-like is selling 405nm Nichia diodes now (check the BR thread) and they show a somewhat similar profile to the 6X but they are spendy ($80+sh diode only) as well as somewhat untested, a few people have messed with them and they show some promise but the tested diodes are all dead at this time, IIRC.

For $200 (give or take) the 8X diodes are showing some real potential, check the BR threads for 8X, Dave is running some serious experiments and actually has documented over 500mW out of an 8X that is still alive!

If I remember correctly, the 4X diode is a little beefier and more consistent than the PHR diode.

They are very slightly more powerful and consistent than a PHR. Whether or not it's enough to be worth the extra $$ is the subject of debate, however.

So a PHR can be pushed to around 150 to 200mW and it will be stable enough for use in scanners or long term use?

I never push PHR's over 120mA, and I've had a few fail at that input, even with beefy heatsinking (I tend to run them fixed at 114mA and that's proven pretty safe)...

150-200mW? Someone's been reading a lot on Ebay, it would seem...

Hmm right ok, and no not ebay... the exact same forum this topic is posted in.

110mW PHR, >140mW 4x & >170mW 6x Blu-Rays
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/fo...pl?board=b_bst

I remember there being a topic somewhere about driving blue rays high enough to produce around 200mW and was doing so for hours with good heat sinking with no trouble.

The 4X diode is available for $38, and can be pushed marginally further than the PHRs in general. I would get an 8X (if I had the money!) and have a lot of fun at 500+mW!

I'm pretty sure everyone will be with me on that one; You'd rather spend a few more $ and get twice the fun, grab a 8x.

I run my PHRs @ 90mA and I have yet to have one die from overcurrent.. I've been running one 24/7 for nearly 4 1/2 months with no significant degradation. That's roughly 3240 hours @ 90mA

Default Re: Price Quote: Blue Ray 4x & 6x

90mA is well within the accepted "safe" range, and don't misunderstand me, I also have seen all the posts regarding "freak" 803t's running solid and reliably at 150-200mW - I'm just saying the normally accepted safe range for 90+% of the 803t's is 120mA or under, which would give you a similar mW output (and a greatly reduced risk of failure)...

The "Ebay" was thrown in because it really just hacks me off to see most of the sellers there advertising the 803t's as capable of 150-200mW or more (again, they are referring to the exceptions, definitely not the norm).

Just go 8X with the Jayrob lens kit ($275-ish plus driver) and make sure to document the hell out of the performance, lifespan, etc - you can help "set the bar" for BR!

my supplier is ur supplier and many other peoples supplier lol u can get the 4x diode for 23-25 bucks *

but if u run a phr diode at 150ma u will get very close to 150mw i have one here at 120ma and putting out 130mw

Ok fair enough... I have a PHR in my blue ray build and its slowly dieing, its at 100mA and just randomly decided to go from estimated 90mw (using a graph to work out the mW) to around about 20mW with a rather odd rectangle around the not 2mm dot.

My plan is to make a fairly high power blue ray that will be used for extended periods of time and eventually used in a RGV scanner. My second, maybe cheaper, idea is to get a beam combiner for blue ray if they are made and combine two PHRs at 100mW giving me 200mW of violet. Only trouble with that is I am not sure how that would react to analogue/ttl modulation.
