Re: PRICE DROP: FS: Damaged 445nm Diodes, $20

I was wondering the same thing... I mean, the idea is that a zombie is simply a heat-damaged diode, right? So I figure that the diodes would last as long as a normal diode as long as there is no *more* heat-damage done to them. So I figure that, as long as adequate heatsinking is done, they would be fine?

As for warranties... there is no way I am going to warranty a zombie diode - that would be ridiculous. They are sensitive enough as it is, having already been zombified :p

so are the lens included?
or will i have to get a axiz module to go with this?
thx

Lens wouldn't be included, but the Aixiz module (the part the diode fits in) would be. I wouldn't mind throwing in an Aixiz glass lens, but that would make it $30 + shipping (the Aixiz glass lenses cost $10 from Aixiz themselves). That said, Now that I think of it, an acrylic lens actually may do for these things, considering they are not that powerful. Nonetheless, I would think that you would get more power out of an Aixiz glass.

You are asking half the price for a diode that does a lot less than 1/4 of the power the rest can, plus you have no idea how long they will last in this "zombie" state. I think a warranty wouldn't be too bad of an idea especially considering your asking price.

Good luck with your sale!

While yes, it is 1/4 of the power, the only other way to get any amount of power is to buy a brand new diode - there is not really an in between. So basically I am just offering a cheaper alternative to those who want a weaker 445 laser. After all - a PHR is a third the price of a 12x, but it can only do 20% of the power of those 12x's, yet they still sell - the point is, if you want a cheaper laser just for the color, or as a beginner, this would be the way to go.

Regarding warranty... how would I go about guaranteeing this, then? Send another zombied diode if that one LEDs? And how would I go about determining if the user damaged it further by pushing it over 900mA, overdid it with a duty-cycle, or just flat-out killed it? It's not a fully-assembled piece, so it's kind of hard to offer a warranty on it with tamper-proofing.

I'm seriously asking for advice on how to warranty this, because I can't see any way to make sure that someone doesn't just fry the diode trying to get more out of it than recommended, and then asking for a refund or something.

But, thanks for the good luck :D

Yep, trying to warranty such a thing is pretty tedious. You might be better off sticking a cheap driver in the back of an aixiz module and sealing the thing shut somehow.

The PHR and 12X argument is flawed, the PHR is a new undamaged diode. You can be almost certain that a PHR will have a long life at 90mA. These diodes, not so much. These diodes are going to have to do something with all that extra heat.

The debate really has nothing to do with fractions of full power, or price per mW, etc etc. Though to be accurate, this zombie is actually doing more like 1/8th the normal power.

To make this practical, I think you need to ditch the complications surrounding warranty, guarantee, etc. You'd also need to ditch the $20 (50% of new) selling price. I think this concept could be reasonable, if you were saying "$10 a diode, shipped in a 50 cent bubble envelope, with 50 cents of postage, for a total of $11"

AS-IS, no returns, no warranty, no life-span promises. Just a ten-buck zombie diode for someone on a limited budget to play with.

Re: PRICE DROP: FS: Damaged 445nm Diodes, $20

You are correct sir. However, how much extra heat are we talking here? No more than the typical 445 at 1.2W, no?

If a typical 445 takes 1.5A at 4.5V in to output 1.2W, that's 5.55W of dissipated power. Whereas, for these guys, it takes 900mA at 4.3V in (or so) and outputs 200mW of power. That's only dissipating 3.67W of heat. So, assuming equal heatsinking, I would think this would last longer than a diode at 1.2W.

And do you have any suggestions as for what kind of driver I could shove in that little Aixiz module? I know Jib doesn't do drivers anymore, so that's out the window.

EDIT: I think RHD may be correct - $20 may be, unfortunately, too high for these two things. Ah well.

Price drop to $10 + shipping per!

You could just list them on ebay "2 A140 diodes AS IS" with no description.

Ben, that'd be evil :p But it may actually be reasonable if I list them for like $15 or so with no guarantees.

Now you got me all interested. How much would it be with the driver installed? with the acrylic lens). Thanks!

I wasn't actually planning on installing a driver and a lens with this - I don't have the drivers to fit inside the moduels nor the acrylic lenses to accompany to accompany them. These are for DIY usage, man!

So I decided I am going to list them on eBay. If you make an offer on them though, and I see you are LPF, it will probably be accepted (as long as it's reasonable). That way, it's an easier transaction and all that.
