Default Not FS: 'Pocket Pal' & Leadlight! - Request Power!

No longer selling these... Please read this:
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/fo...m=1231511226/0

But I am selling DIY Build Kits & Heatsinks! See here: http://www.sonic.net/~jayrob/MXDL/

This is a great little pocket size host for an 803T diode! (405nm Blu-Ray) Using 3 X AAA batteries. This is a large capacity for such a small host! You can see how small it is next to the Kryton barrel...

Also, this build will fit a Meredith glass lens. Or, you may want a red burner in one of these large capacity, pocket sized hosts! It is a very versatile build!

Key to the build: I made a custom little heatsink with set screw...providing a nice clean, solid mount for the business end of an AixiZ module...

Because of the limited space, after removing the LED lights from the board, I mounted the FlexDrive 'flat'. (love those FlexDrives)

Don't let the size of this little guy fool you...This is a very solid build!

I really like the use of the Lithium primaries. I can throw this little guy in the glove box or what ever, and not have to worry about it losing charge.

115mA's will put you at or above 100mW's. For 110mW's, I will set it around 125mA's.
For even better longevity, the 100mA setting will put you around 90mW's. (AixiZ acrylic - plastic cut away) Some are running these 803T diodes much higher. I've got my Leadlight blu-ray running at 145mA's and it is doing fine:

http://www.laserpointerforums.com/fo...num=1217094699
Just let me know if you want a higher current setting.

If the LD ever dies, I would rebuild it for you. You just pay for parts and shipping.

(Beam shot - with some smoke)

Normal garage lighting with some smoke.

Glow Tile video...Cool!

Leadlights!I have Leadlight mods available as well! Using the FlexDrive - Blu-ray, or Red.
Can be fit for a Meredith module for the price difference in parts!

(Beam shots - with some smoke)

Here's my DIY Green Laser Build!:

Jay

P.S. For the 'Pocket Pal', you have the option of using rechargeable batteries, the Sanyo Eneloop batteries are the best. (not included)
Note: Leadlight mods must use AAA primaries, not rechargeable. (2 X AAA Energizer e2 Lithium included)

i am nobody to judge you but i think it's too expensive (IMHO!!). but maybe the build quality justifies the price

Fair enough...Probably some others may feel the same.

Figure about $80 or $90 dollars in parts when you consider the awesome FlexDrive driver, and the custom mount/heatsink.

It's the time involved in making the heatsink and modification. Not to mention testing the driver and making sure the finished product is perfect!

What you are paying for besides the quality parts...is design, and build quality.

If I come down in price, it's not going to be by a lot.

As you know, I will freely share my building techniques and give answers to anybody who is interested in doing this build on their own!
Jay

It's not expensive at all Jay. Don't worry about it, it's a quality laser. I think $225 is more than justified.

I'll have to second that Jay. Your prices meet your quality very well. If you were a corp you could easily slap a 3x multiplier on all your prices especially taking into account your R&D and helpfulness. I won't prolly be buying another laser from you (thanks for the first one, it really got me into the hobby) but i will buy your heatsinks and other stuff.

Good going jay keep it up.

Great compliment! Thank you...

I can make these little heatsinks as well. They use less than half of the material of the MXDL heatsinks, but they take me just about as much machine time, plus the set screw. So the price is the same as the other heatsinks...

Of course 225 bucks is a great price, I mean just a few months back this was a fair price for low powered blurays. It's a great price for a high powered one.

Ok, for those of you who want to do this build on your own, here is a tutorial of how I did it. (of course, there is more than one way to do it)

This looks like the same light (different color): http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.46 But it requires a slightly adjusted heatsink. I have heatsink dimensions for this DX host now! It is the exact same build as this tutorial.

The host I use, is made by VicLight. Model LF-D01 This is the host:
http://www.wholesalecentral.com/lali...pagenumber%3D2

(You can buy the complete build from me, or DIY using my tutorial!)

The key to my 'style' build, is the heatsink. This provides a nice clean, solid mount for the business end of an AixiZ module. Although this heatsink is smaller than my MXDL heatsinks, it takes just about as much machine time. I have to do the set screw as well. So if you want one, it will cost the same as my MXDL heatsinks. (You would need a 1.5mm Allen wrench for the set screw)

If you want a heatsink, just let me know if it is for the DX sku 46 host! (One 'thick' O-ring, that is shown in this tutorial will be included with each heatsink)

Using the PHR-803T diode: http://www.laserpointerforums.com/fo...num=1209940381
With a FlexDrive: *http://www.laserpointerforums.com/fo...num=1209418066
AixiZ acrylic lens, plastic cut away.
Using 3 X AAA batteries. I like the Lithium primaries!
Set at 100mA's, putting out 91mW's at that current! (some are running these 803T diodes at higher currents. I like 100mA's - still good longevity... I also have one running at 145mA's to see how it does)

* First step is to take the light apart...

That 'trimmed' thin metal washer will go back in last, after the mod is done.
* Next, (read notes on picture)

Use your DMM to test continuity on the board for the driver connections to positive and negative.
* Now, take a very close look at this next picture...

The plastic piece that we cut the center out of and 'flipped' around, makes space for the FlexDrive.

* Set driver current. For the FlexDrive, you must use a load to set the current. (Six silicon diodes (1N4001) in series, work perfect for a blu-ray) Here's a good diagram from rog8811 on how to set up a 'dummy load' for a red diode/DDL driver (works the same for the FlexDrive), for a blu-ray, just use 6 instead of 4:
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/fo...m=1197651171#1
* Solder wires. Don't forget the heat shrink tubing.
* After placing the board/driver into position, use the thin metal washer that we 'trimmed'.
* It goes in last. This washer makes contact with some negative solder points on the board. As you tighten the case, it makes contact with the thin washer, 'pressing' the o-ring 'cushion' tight. Giving good ground, and stabilizing the heatsink.

The result, is a very solid, but pocket sized, awesome little laser!

To finish it off, you can make a nice 'dust cap' from these silicone tailcaps: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5498
Which come in different colors as well.

You just turn it 'inside out', and cut the little 'nub' off. (Thank Senkat for that one!)...
Jay

P.S. The battery holder (whether it be black or clear), has these small 'tabs' at a couple of points where the POSITIVE end of the batteries need to make contact with the flat metal contact points.

Use a knife and 'snap' or cut the tabs to make sure your batteries make good contact. The thickness of the tabs can cause a weak connection, or no connection at all...

P.S.S. If you do not want to use the Lithium primaries, but like rechargeable batteries better, the Sanyo Eneloop batteries are the best...

Update: I got the DX sku 46 host today and it is basically identical... it will be the same exact tutorial. There is a very slight difference...

The very front, where the heatsink protrudes through, is a little smaller in diameter. Also, the total distance in the head, is a little longer.

So, the heatsink will be adjusted to fit, and this host can be used to follow this tutorial exactly!

Note: The heatsink will be .050 in. longer at the back (inside the host). This is to compensate for the slightly longer distance inside the head space of this host...

How do you "carefully remove" this ring. I had to split the ones I have removed so far.

Peace,
dave

I was able to use a small flat blade screwdriver. Just work at one point, get it bent upward. Then just flatten it back out after your done trimming the edges...
Jay

P.S. I think I'll put this tutorial in the [s]Blu-ray laser[/s] 'Tutorial' section too. I think it is a great build, and the 'how to' can be seen better over there.
