hey would the diode choice made an discernable impact on my laser? I had mine with the sony one... Also i was wondering if you have tried to burn with the glass lens how much "worse" is it for that? I don't have a lser with it (yet) so i'm a bit qurious regarding the differences between the lenses

I have been getting very consistent readings with the open can diodes. There have been just minimal differences between them. It may be just coincidence, but it seems that the Pioneer diodes have been 5mW's to 10mW's better. (depending on the lens)

This is not always the case though...

Your Sony Optiarc diode puts out more than the last Pioneer build that I did at the same current! Well, close to the same current... Your driver came out 2mA's more.

Murudai will find that for burning, he will like the acrylic lens better. It will focus easier too. The Meredith glass lens is VERY 'touchy' for focussing. If you had a dot of paint to mark the 5' focal point, the 100' dot would only be about 1/16" clockwise.

That said, the Meredith glass lens does just fine for burning. We saw that from mikeeey's video!
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/fo...m=1206219782/0

With regards to burning, I would say that for me, it seems that beyond 10' or 12', it's tough to get a match light with the Meredith glass lens. Balloon pops at about 25' to 30'. But if your good at focussing the acrylic lens, you can do much better! I can light a black tipped match at 20' in less than 3 seconds with an acrylic lens at that power!

BoostCrzy got a 50' balloon pop! (he must be very good at getting focus)
http://www.laserpointerforums.com/fo...m=1206415617/0

If your looking for a brighter beam (campfires are nice - lots of smoke), the Meredith glass lens is nicer.

Just selling the completed lasers....or, the heatsinks separate. To get over 300mW's, we are pushing the open can diodes pretty hard at 470mA's. (nice thick heatsink is the only reason we are getting away with it) This will give you over 310mW's with a Meredith Glass lens. And about 260mW's with an acrylic lens.

260mW's with an acrylic lens is one serious burner. But really, 240mW's is plenty awesome. And better for the LD @ 420mA's.

I've got 3 of those HOT 270mA units out there....so far, so good!

I'm not so sure about that

There are two types of burning. The one where you try to set fire to something and melt a hole in it, which the acrylic is best for. Then there is cutting like with plastic bags and such where you try to cut a swathe through something rather than a hole.

The meredith glass will perform far better at cutting a swathe through black plastic because it is able to get the same power from a much wider beam, and the wider beam will allow an easier cut. Where as the acrylic will have a better chance of burning into much tougher materials.

That's why I want both, because there are different burning situations where they can be useful for

It's on it's way to you! I believe you mentioned in a different thread that you were planning to do a review of your comparison between the two Meredith lenses.

That should be very interesting. Looking forward to that! 8-)

Your laser is seriously HOT man. Watch the duty at that power...

Egor, the diodes are pretty much the same. It just seems that the Pioneer diodes have been a little better, but not every time. I do have both drives. Sony, and Pioneer. The biggest decision (and cost difference), is lens choice.

I recommend setting the driver at 420mA's. Some have asked to set it at 470mA's, which is pushing the open can diodes pretty hard.

But, so far, so good! 8-)

Do you see any difference between the meridith and Aixiz acrylic lens? Which one gets the smallest point and which one is the least touchy to focus? Is there a difference?

The differences between the Meredith acrylic vs the AixiZ acrylic are so minimal, that they can be considered the same for burning and focusing...IMO.

The Meredith would have the slight edge if anything. But for the cost, the AixiZ cannot be beat.

The other difference is in the 'feel' of the focus. The Meredith has a thick brass focus knob...and is not as 'sloppy'. (threads)

The Meredith acrylic lens is AR coated, and the AixiZ is not. (as far as I know) What kind of coating, I don't know. But you can see a 'bluish' film.

The actual lenses are the same size! I have put an AixiZ lens into a Meredith module for comparison testing...

KC, your 243mW Meredith acrylic MXDL will be in the mail tomorrow:

Egor, your 'special build' will be in the mail tomorrow as well: (Egor specified these components and current)

Note: I just want to remind everybody (or, new ones), that I am not recommending the 470mA setting for current. Some have asked for it.

I trust that we all have seen Lava's graph, and know that 470mA's is pushing these open can diodes pretty hard. 420mA's seems to be the 'sweet spot'. (heatsinked)

That said, I think I have 5 out there now that are at 470mA's. (per buyer's request - with the exception of Senkat, I just sent him one like that) So far, so good...

Anyway, these babies are HOT....Watch the duty cycle!

Please get back to me. I would like to hear from both of you!
Jay

How much would be shipping of one builded laser to Brazil? Is it ok for you declaring it as a gift and with a lower value(U$30)?
What's exactly the difference between the AixiZ module and Meredith acrylic? Can I specify the current I want in my laser after you do a run out at 420ma to decide whether I want you to increase it or not? Also, what's the time you take to build it after ordering?
PS:I'd rather send a PM,but I don't have 15 posts yet :P

What's exactly the difference between the AixiZ module and Meredith acrylic? Can I specify the current I want in my laser after you do a run out at 420ma to decide whether I want you to increase it or not? Also, what's the time you take to build it after ordering?
PS:I'd rather send a PM,but I don't have 15 posts yet :P
First Class International to Brazil is $9.85. (no insurance) For registered mail, add $10.80.

The biggest difference between the AixiZ and Meredith acrylic lenses, is the cost of the Meredith. If money is no issue, go with the Meredith because you can switch lenses with a Meredith glass lens very easily. For burning, the AixiZ acrylic lens is very good. About the same as the Meredith acrylic.

I have a build ready to ship using the AixiZ acrylic lens pictured here:

It is very stable at 247mW's. Yes, I can change the driver from 420mA's to 470mA's. At the higher current, using an acrylic lens, you can expect 260mW's or more.

But the recommended current setting for these open can reds (heatsinked) is 420mA's.

Check the reviews that are linked on that site that I have there.

As far as build time, I have all parts on hand. I can build you one in an evening, and have it in the mail the next day!

I would have to use a different driver. Or, put a pot on the DDL style driver. At that current, I would have to find a 1 watt pot that is small enough to fit.

420mA's is a good place to be for this diode/heatsink combo. I have a Kryton barrel/FlexDrive/open can combo running at 450mA's, as well as a nice blu-ray in this barrel/driver combo:

These are supplied with 2 X 3.0 volt lithium primaries. Which can be left sitting for months (or even years) and still hold their charge. The excellent FlexDriver from Lava, is held in a stable position by some 'quick set epoxy putty', which will come off easy enough if the diode should ever need to be replaced:

I may offer 3 or 4 of these builds. The barrel itself is the heatsink. The Lava FlexDrive is the best, but cost $23 to $25. But because of the limited availability of the awesome barrels from Kenom, they will be priced higher than my MXDL builds. I was thinking $295.
Jay

P.S. I must say that I am amazed at these drivers from DrLava. These are my first two builds using the FlexDrivers, and both of them are totally stable on the power meter! No fluctuation in power at all! It must be these awesome drivers!
