Default Re: F.S. * 300mW MXDL Open Can Laser With Heatsink

Got now my 2 lasers!

Build quality is very high, they feels good and thick, so handling is very comfortable and functional.
Also opened both, I'm always curious to look inside..
Heatsink, brass trim, switch on tail cap, wiring, driver.. all is sturdy and clearly assembled to last forever.

Tried the 248mW Sony with the dot-marked focus,
I've made _instantly_ at 5 feets _true_ holes in a cd case.

And for the Pioneer one [255mW]..
Maybe its just me but it seems lot more powerful.. more than the 255mW 248mW diff.
8-)

Thanx a lot, Jay, amazing stuff!

Good to know that you received them! Yeah...I wanted to keep that 112D build for myself. It was the first one that I got over 250mW's using an acrylic lens with a 3 ohm resistor. But since you ordered 2 lasers, and it was the only other one that I had parts for at the time, I let it go. Thanks for the review...

Ok, the one that I had pictured here for S.D. that was only putting out 227mW's. That diode died. So it must have been damaged or something. I have never got that low of a reading at 420mA's before...

Default Re: F.S. * 300mW MXDL Open Can Laser With Heatsink

Updated:
I rebuilt the laser for S.D., using a new diode (Optiarc):

Per his request, I have replaced the 3 ohm resistor, with a 2.7 ohm resistor.
The driver is putting out 470mA's. The Optiarc open can is measuring 264.7mW's through the Meredith acrylic lens.

This thing is AWESOME at this power! When I did my 5' focus dot of paint, and tested the match burn, it lit so instantaneously, that it just about lit before it even touched the beam! Lol.

Remember to use a duty cycle of 1 min. on/30 sec. off at this current to be on the safe side. Although, it could probably be on for much longer with that heatsink, why chance killing the diode? On the other hand, these diodes are pretty cheap these days!

I have e-mailed S.D. I will give him a couple of days to respond. If he does not respond, or has changed his mind, this build will be 'up for grabs'. - $195 plus shipping...

Default Re: F.S. * 300mW MXDL Open Can Laser With Heatsink

Received today

after a huge fiasco ( no fault of jayrob)

because of the UK customs: i paid a extra 36 release fee ( $70)

still worth it i had a bit of a flutter(bit i had a full panic attack :P GEEK FTW) because the batts had discharged over the 3-4 weeks it was in transit whereas they were charged on shipping by jayrob i am using 3v cr123A "normal" batts atm so lower power ratings whist my cr123 charger arrives to get it going full blast ( waiting on jayrob weather these will cause damage)

with the glass lens the beam is damn phat *( good) around 3-4mm at lens but its stays at 3-4 mm for around 30ft once i focus it good ( takes around 30 mins and then undo all the work for burning fun)

mind you even at that size it slices through binbags 4 layers thick like a exacto knife...

i dont have a decent video camera only a crappy phone camera with no pc connectivity so no vids or pics ( others have done plenty)

cant wait for nighttime ( 8pm atm here) to see if it has a visible beam

also i think the new diodes pioneer i think are a lower nm rating so thats why they burn better at the same mw because with nm comes more energy in frequency burns

tomcat, I'm glad to hear it finally got to you. I can't believe those fees you had to pay! I had no idea.
It won't hurt the laser to use the 3.0 volt batteries, but it will not be putting out the 300+ mW's that I measured it at. Not without the 3.6 volt batteries.

I have had batteries sitting for over a month and they did not discharge. So, I am wondering if one of the batteries is just bad?? Maybe the protection circuit is bad. I had a brand new battery fail on me once. I panicked at first too! Always start with the basic things first when diagnosing. Lol! Like if your car won't start, you always check the gas tank first. As a reminder, it is best to use a duty cycle of 1 min. on/30 sec. off at that kind of power.

If it is a bad battery, let me know and I will PayPal you. Sending you one is out of the question with the customs fees and stuff! Keep me informed...

Here's the next one...Same build. Optiarc open can with a Meredith acrylic lens:

The driver is putting out 423mA's, and the peak measurement that I got is very consistent with these builds - 243mW's.

I built this after lam3 had expressed some interest. If he has changed his mind, this build will be up for grabs. $195 plus shipping...

hey jay thank for the info i think its running around 190-210 mw by approximation but it looks like 660nm to me rather than 650nm ( find both in dvdrws) its a bit deeper compared to a senkat diode labby and my 635...

anyway got my Multimeter on the batts and i got 1mV on both (noize) and infinate resistance on both

i think the pcb disconnects at at cirtian point or there both shot will try charging once my charger arrives 1week from now

am going to do a review tomorrow

Yeah tomcat, if you don't have the 3.6 volt batteries at that power, the LM317 won't be able to maintain the 1.25 volts across it's sense resistor and will drop out.

Out of about 20 or 28 batteries, I have only had one fail so far. But if you find that one, or even both of yours are bad, just let me know, and I will make it right.

I am looking forward to your review! Only, I hope you use the correct batteries for your review. So that it will be accurate. You will see 300mW's out or your 112D/Meredith glass laser with the 3.6 volt batteries...
Jay

Did you tell the customs how much it cost, or why did they charge you so much? I'm asking, because i'd like to know how the customs behave in different countries.

Our customs (Slovenia) are very anal, and they even go online, to check if prices on the invoice are correct. Above a certain value, i always have to pay custom fees and import taxes. Fake invoices used to help, but now they are even more annoying because of that. Sometimes i even have to show them my credit card statement, because they don't understand, that as a dealer, i get lower prices on what my company resells.

I sent it insured. So that's why I put a value of $200 dollars. I didn't realize there were those kind of customs fees! Shipping with in the U.S. is so easy. It may be better with International shipping, to just take the chance and not ship with insurance. Then just mark it as a gift with a $10 dollar value or something. So far, I have never had anything lost in the mail.

klost paid extra for UPS shipping so that we could track the package online. I believe those ones went to Italy...

If the real value is declared or the package is even insured, you can expect your international customers to pay high customs fees. I have lots of experiences in dealing with them, and hardly any are pleasant, even tho it's all official with all the required documents and all.

At one time i drove 100 miles to the capital city (where the customs post office is) and they didn't believe the paperwork, so i had to drive back and there again. Spent most of the day just driving. And it happens EVERY time, even tho it's allways the same few items with the same few prices.

At the moment, i'm expecting a 150mW CNI pointer from China, and even tho i paid 225 Euro for it, i asked them to mark the value as 20, just to avoid problems with the customs.

Even this doesn't always help, but if there should be any problems, i will just show them a DealExtreme transaction on my credit card statement together with a fake invoice.

Meh, I know your problems with the customs. I always ask companies to mark it much lower, but sometimes they just don't listen. Just the other day I had to pay 90 euro's extra for 160 euro's worth of clothing. That's just harsh, since I already paid 100 dollars for the shipping.

Anyways, jayrob, I will have an answer regarding your build soon, I just need to see if I can allocate the cash. I'll PM you like tomorrow. Thanks.

Ok, I'll look for your PM! Since we are talking about customs and stuff. The cheapest postage from the U.S. to the Netherlands, is Piority mail International, the cost is $18 dollars for a 1 lb. package.

I would mark it as a 'Gift'. And putting the value at $10 or $20 dollars is fine, except that means no insurance on the shipping. I think you can tell from my thread feedback that I wouldn't try to rip you off, but if you wanted to take a chance and save on the shipping charges/no insurance, I will send it any way you want. It's not likely that it would get lost in the mail. But you would be taking the chance. Sound reasonable?

Jayrob, as long as you use registered priority air-mail, where you get a tracking number and the recipient needs to sign, the package is usualy safe.

You can usualy track packages like that, untill they leave your country on your local post tracking sites, and after they reach the destination country, at destination tracking sites.

You can even see if it was succesfully delivered and signed for this way. The "registered" part is most important here. It has 99% siccesfull delivery rate, or so i heard.

I just checked the on-line site again. And it looks like there is a 'First class' rate of only $10.40 from the U.S. to the Netherlands. It has an option to add 'Registered' for an additional $10 bucks for a total of $20.40. Thanks for the tips! Good to know...
