Yep, I killed a diode in an MXDL I made by doing that.  I inadvertently twisted the wires and turned it on=dead diode.  And I can vouch for the quality of Jayrob's products and instructions/documentations,etc.  I purchased a heatsink form him and the quality is outstanding, very professional.  And the price of these is incredible considering it has a Meredith module.  If you aren't good at building drivers and/or extracting diodes, you would probably spend more than this doing it yourself after killing a diode or two.  And I would know, I have killed a few LDs for various reasons- from the driver putting out more current than i thought due to an incorrect solder joint(had it correct, but wire broke and I ree-soldered it in wrong spot),to barely twisting the positive lead from the LD and ripping the tiny hair-wire off the chip itself.

Steve, I appreciate those fine words of yours! Good reminders for everyone about how easy it is to inadvertently twist the wires, which would ruin the driver, and possibly the LD.

tomcat, I got your package all ready for you. I'm dropping it in the mail today. You paid for priority shipping with insurance. I don't know how long it will take, probably 4 days or so.

After changing the resistor, your Pioneer 112D open can diode, ended up with 305mW's @ 418mA's out of your Meredith glass module. I think your going to like it! But let me know...
Jay

P.S. If you stick to the duty cycle, your heatsink won't get but a couple of degrees above the ambient room temperature. It stays very cool. It could probably be left on for much longer. But we know that the LD will last longer it you treat it nice.

Re: F.S. * 300mW MXDL Open Can Laser With Heatsink

Here's another brand new laser that I just finished up for P.K. He contacted me direct by e-mail. He wanted a Meredith glass module with the Sony NEC Optiarc open can diode. As you know, every diode is just a little different. Gazoo has a diode from the same drive, that is putting out at least 30mW more that this one at the same current! (but his is unusual)

You can see the 'inset' picture of the driver. I could easily change the resistor to a 2.7 ohm, and it would be right around 320mW's @ 468mA's. For now, I will leave it at 420mA's. After all, 289mW's isn't too bad. It would be my guess, that at 289mW's, this 'sturdy' LD, would run for quite some time. If not abused. (this is the peak measurment)

If P.K. doesn't respond to my e-mail, this clean build will be up for grabs! - $205 plus shipping...

Thanks for that +1! Just to let everybody know, I'm running low on the matches and resistors now. So, I won't be offering them anymore. Yours are in there for you though tomcat...

Came in yesterday! Very solid (nothing rattled, well packaged), easy to focus, straight out of the bubble wrap. Very nice touch on the lens cap, too!
Very satisfied

what is the divergence on the 2 types you are building? and do they always stay at tem00?

Re: F.S. * 300mW MXDL Open Can Laser With Heatsink

Do you or anybody else manufacture green portables with an output of 200 - 400 mW ? I would be interested in buying such a unit from a respected builder here if it had equivalent performances with similar units from reputable manufacturers.

Also what is the burning power on those lasers you build now ? Do you have any pictures with them on, indoors and out ? Perhaps reviews by members who bought them along other similar lasers from good producers ?

Very stable with in the suggested duty cycle. I'm sure they could be left on for much longer. But why chance killing the diode? As far as divergence, it is going to depend on the focus setting. I can focus it at 100', and the size of the dot is not much larger than it is at 15'.

I have some detailed information on these questions in the first post of this thread. A link to a burn video as well...

Re: F.S. * 300mW MXDL Open Can Laser With Heatsink

No info whatsoever on my specific questions, not in the first post or the linked thread. There are no relevant pictures (of the lasers lighting or burning) and the movie is also relatively useless (noone thinks a 300 mW won't light matches). If this is how you reply to a potential customer, why would I want to do business with you ? LOL
