Default No Longer FS: PointedFire 1,100mW 446nm - Finned Brushed Metal

For Sale: Pointed-Fire 1,100mW 446nm - Finned Brushed Metal

This build is very similar to the FandyFire build listed earlier, so I'm adding it to this thread instead of opening a new one (but I've preserved the previous build's photos and text at the bottom for future reference).

This is a FandyFire build with an externalized finned heatsink made by Helios. I'm calling this a "PointedFire" build It runs on 2x 16340 or 2x 18350 (rechargeable 3.7V lithium ions recommended). It comes with a 3-element glass lens - and in this case I went with the half-threaded Aixiz. It really demands such a lens. Because of the appearance of the heatsink, it just doesn't look right to use a full-threaded lens with a focus knob on it. Though at request, I'll swap the lens for a full-threaded. This build uses a 1085 based driver that is entirely encased within the heatsink itself. It spectrometers at 446nm. It LPMs at 1,100mW+ on my LaserBee, and peaks at 1,350mW on my Ophir (during the first 45 seconds that aren't captured on a LaserBee USB 2.5W model).

This is not a laser pointing device. At all times, protective laser safety glasses appropriate for this wavelength must be worn by the operator. This laser should not be used around 3rd parties (non-operators) pets, or for any recreational purpose.

This laser is meant to be used as a portable calibration laser light source for LPM (laser power meter) sensors and meter systems. In order to ensure the most reliable calibration for your system, it is prudent to use multiple calibration lasers, representing multiple wavelengths, as well as multiple output powers, spanning the range of an LPM sensor's working detection range.

You MUST NOT be a resident of Canada
You MUST own laser protection goggles appropriate for this wavelength, and
You MUST be over 20 years of age, and
You MUST be familiar and experienced with the appropriate safety precautions to take with lasers of this power.

---------Previously Listed Build---------

For Sale: FandyFire 1,000mW 452nm - Brushed Metal

This is a build I put together a few weeks ago. It runs on 2x CR2s (rechargeable 3.7V lithium ions recommended). It comes with a 3-element glass lens, 1085 based driver, and custom focus knob. It spectrometers at 452nm - a nice high wavelength that enhances visibility. For 1W laser, it's remarkably bright. It LPMs at 1,000mW+ on my LaserBee, and peaks at 1,300mW on my Ophir (during the first 45 seconds that aren't captured on a LaserBee).

Price: $195 shipped (North America). Internationally, or if you want faster shipping options, PM me. This laser's purpose is to produce a variable focus blue beam of coherent light that is highly visible, in as many various lighting and environment conditions as possible, by observers in both near proximity and at a distance to the beam.

You MUST NOT be a resident of Canada
You MUST own laser protection goggles appropriate for this wavelength, and
You MUST be over 20 years of age, and
You MUST be familiar and experienced with the appropriate safety precautions to take with lasers of this power.

Wow! If I had proper eye wear, I'd grab this up immediately!

However, I have no real use for a class iv, nor can I afford it... but this is a sweet host/laser, good luck with the sale!

I love your builds... but not so much the battery choice. I noticed you very often use cr2's... is there a reason, or do you just have a large stockpile of them?

I don't think I often use CR2s, do I? No more than I use 16340s, or 18350s, etc.

It always depends on the host. This build fits 2x CR2s well. For larger higher powered builds, I'd use 2x 18350. Or, as is the case with two really high spec biulds I did last weekend, 2x 26550

It always depends on the build. The only thing I will never do, is use a flexdrive.

peteschlabar: I don't have any extras, but I could order you a pair of protective glasses.

If you had the extra money to buy this laser, then you should spend it on goggles. At these powers they are extremely dangerous. Thats why rhd will only sell to people with goggles. These lasers are no joke. Even if you dont go for the group buy, get a cheaper pair. At least you'll have some protection. Its very easy to get relaxed around lasers.

Understood. That is very scary, and I'm not dismissing the fact of the need for eye protection, I'm just saying I can't afford either, and especially both, since I'm already having a custom 445 built for me. I actually don't have a real use for a high powered laser, nor have plans to purchase one, I'm just saying this is a really nice one, and I would like to own it just because its cool. If I did decide to purchase a class IV, I would definitely have the goggles on the way before the laser. But again, I really have no use for it. Cheers

Idk, but seems like you do use cr2's a lot. Maybe I just like the hosts you tend to use them in that's all.

I'm confused.

Please be clear when you post, and dont post stuff you dont mean. Obviously you would not grab this up if you had the proper eye wear because you cant afford it, and you didnt really want a laser at this power.

Sorry for the bickering rhd. Free bumps though.

No worries - I've enjoyed the dialog. It's a valid point.

Don't say "I'd take this if I had glasses" if the truth is that when offered glasses for free, you still wouldn't take it

I'm not actually bothered by this, but what I AM worried about is the fact that he is buying a custom 445 from Lazeerer, but he doesn't have any safety glasses for that build. It's just a single mode, but remember, those are 50 to 200mW. I hope we haven't come to the state of feeling like 50 to 200mW doesn't require safety glasses?

If this kid is buying a custom single-mode build, but hasn't set aside money for glasses, that's a problem.

I'm confused.

Please be clear when you post, and dont post stuff you dont mean. Obviously you would not grab this up if you had the proper eye wear because you cant afford it, and you didnt really want a laser at this power.

Sorry for the bickering rhd. Free bumps though.
You are correct, my apologies for confusion. I did post something I didn't really mean. I guess I got excited from the pictures. I'll try to put it a better way:
I really like this laser, very nice host, good nm color, very nice laser overall. It would be fun to have...however, I have no real use for it, and can't afford it anyway, nor do I have the proper eye protection.

Again I am sorry for any confusion, I really like 445 builds and I got excited with this sweet host.

Again, the big concern here should be -

What glasses do you have that will protect you when using the single-mode 445nm build you've purchased? You realize that you need glasses for that too right?

We're getting further and further off topic, but..
The custom build is supposed to be toned down to 20mw... I just put in the order 2 days ago, I'm sure the builder does not have the parts yet, should I request to have the output lower, or, is 5mw the absolute highest "safe" output for a 445 (or any other nm)?
What is the potential damage at >5 to <20mw?

I am still new to this, and in another thread, I asked if 20mw was safe enough to use as a everyday pointer because I understand 445nm is perceived less bright than 532nm, and I want something reasonably bright, but still safe to use without goggles. And IIRC, several people confirmed 20mw should be ok with caution. Please correct if that is wrong so that I can request the builder to lower the output if it will lase as low as 5mw or so.

My apologies once again for taking your thread further off topic.

I'll probably take a bit of heat for this... but for <200mW lasers aside from when I'm lpming, or setting something up with optics, I very rarely put on goggles.

Specular reflections from a ~150mW laser are not that dangerous, depending on the material you're shining the laser at... for example an off white painted wall, 5 feet away.

The big danger lies strictly with either a direct hit, or with a reflection of off a mirror or mirror like surface.

Still... if you can afford a custom laser, affording $15 glasses shouldn't pose a problem. I know Lazeerer has some he could sell you as well.
