500 mW 635nm Build - "The Android Finger"
Second to actually building, my favorite part of the build process is coming up with a name
When I look at this creation, I can't help but picture the "dirty chrome" look of a T-101's endoskeleton (from Terminator) or maybe a Centurion (from BSG). It has the look of polished machinery, as opposed to polished jewelry. This was one of the final hosts I got from Ray J Neal, and he did the polishing on his end. It looks really cool, and I especially love the "texturized" grip area. It has a simple square hatching pattern, but because of the buffing, this area ends up looking almost like chrome alligator skin (that's the best analogy I can come up with). I added the focus adapter (which is actually a re-worked and polished MOD38!)
The Guts:
This build runs on a single 14500. I used the same custom driver PCB that I had designed for use in my "Slim Silver" builds. It worked great for this build. It's a circular triple-AMC driver, that slips directly on top of the diode leads and gets soldered directly to it. There's a thread about the driver (here), and here's a shot of what these diode+driver setups look like:
The driver is so compact that you can still fit a protected 14500 cell in the build. I've been using IMR 14500s, but protected TrustFire 14500s work also. The Android Finger is outputting 500mW on a LaserBee, and peaks higher than that on my Ophir during the first 45 seconds of a cold-start while my LaserBee would be getting its reading.

You MUST NOT be a resident of Canada
You MUST own laser protection goggles appropriate for this wavelength, and
You MUST be over 20 years of age, and
You MUST be familiar and experienced with the appropriate safety precautions to take with lasers of this power.
This is not a laser pointing. At all times, protective laser safety glasses appropriate for this wavelength must be worn by the operator. This laser should not be used around 3rd parties (non-operators) pets, or for any recreational purpose.
This laser's purpose is use as a laser light source for LPM (laser power meter) sensors and meter system calibration. In order to ensure the most reliable calibration for your system, it is prudent to use multiple calibration lasers, representing multiple wavelengths, as well as multiple output powers, spanning the range of an LPM sensor's working detection range.
