These look like great deals so long as the rod's coating is still intact. Also shouldn't they lase at 1064nm? Or are they something besides Nd:YAG?

^Nd:Glass.. 1062 and 1054nm depending on glass type.. Can be doubled to green using KTP or LBO. 1054=>527 or 1062=>531nm

Rods ends polishing is in best condition, they has not been used. But rods are not coated with Ag, Alu or some another type of dielectric reflecting coating like some of Nd:YAG crystals.
And I am sure, that these rods will lase on 1054nm only.

They are very similar to Nd:YAG, only differences are, that Nd:glass are heavily and more homogeneously doped than crystals, and in general, glasses posses broader absorption bands and exhibit longer fluorescence decay times. The primary disadvantage of glass are its broad fluorescence line widths (leading to higher thresholds), its significantly lower thermal conductivity (a factor of 10, leading to thermally induced birefringence and distortion when operated at high pulse repetition rates or high average powers).
These disadvantages limit the use of glass laser rod for CW and high-repetition rate lasers.

The NIF at LLNL (world's most powerful laser system) is powered by Nd:Glass, but the "pulse rate" if you want to call it that is only a few massive pulses per day. Coatings would be nice, but if you side-pump you could get by without them..

Yes, the REALY BIG Nd:glass lasers like 30cm diameter and 10m lenght require a lot of time to cool, but for my little rods 8-10mm diameter and 80-120mm length you could get 1-5Hz pulse rate.:D

Of course, it is not 400Hz for some type of Nd:YAG crystals, but for DIY home or small lab project to build a power supply, capable to charge for example 600uF 1200V capacitor is very hard job:gun:.

Let's do come calculations (I like it:)):
C(farads)=q(coulombs)/U(volts) and I(amp)=q(coulombs)/t(sec)

So formula for DC power supply is I=(C*U)/t

C=600uF = 0.0006F, U=1200V, pulse rate is 400Hz so t=1/400=0.0025sec

So I=(0.00006F*1200V)/0.0025sec = 288 Amp

Total power is P=288Amp*1200V=345600W or 0.345MW power supply!!!:eg:

I hope you realize a couple things, A: You have distroyed any coatings making the rod useless for high energy pulses by measuring it and touching the ends. B: the LLNL NIF is not a large rod. It would be impractical to pump a rod that large as the pump light would get absorbed in the first few cm of the rod and not make it to the core where it is needed. The NIF uses large plate amplifiers and a small seed laser. If anything, it's the worlds largest amplifier, and not a very large laser at all. I think the whole thing starts off with a couple hundred millijoules.
