Re: Feeler: Kryton 405nm building kits (>100mW)

how long will this deal be going on for? I dont think I'm going to be able to make a blu-ray till I get a job...whenever that may be. Will this still be going on in a couple months?

This sounds like a great idea! Darn, if I hadn't ordered all of my parts for my first DIY I would have definently done this. You can't go wrong when buying a kit that has illustrated instructions and you don't have to worry much about blowing your diode :).

Good Idea ;)
Then I'll see you again when you blow your diode? :p

I understand 150mW is not the actual reading, but Ill buy a diode around that power. How many mA are you going to put in the diodes to use determine the power?
That depends on the diode. For more details, see this link:

Probably until half September or October. It depends on the availability of parts. I'll write you down as an interested person. By the time the parts are in and I start committing people, you'll get a final change. (unless there are less than 10 people buying, in which case you can wait as long as you want, and you'll be placed at the end of the list)

Hopefully you don't see me for a long time then;D. I know my diode will blow out eventually but you will see me again long before that happens (Knock on wood). Right now i'm not so much worried about blowing the diode as getting everything put togeather  ;). Once I build mine, if it works good, I'll be able to sell it and buy one of these kits :).

I hate it when summer jobs end, you stop making money and you have to start waking up really early just to go listen to a bunch of people talk about different subjects just so they can load you with work at the end of the day (School) :'(.

Re: Feeler: Kryton 405nm building kits (>100mW)

I'm interested in a ~180mw kit.

People, stop saying which mW you prefer. You'll get the chance to choose when the people above you have chosen theirs. If you're basing the mW on the price, then you might be in for a surprise. When a lot of a certain high mW appear in the real batch, then the price of those will drop and you might want a higher powered one. If there would be a lot of low powered units, the high powered ones will increase in price.

OK, I've got 10 Interested people. Any one who wants one from now on will be put on a reserve-list.

Any little tips? There will be a sheet with instructions and as I said, it's not recommended for people with two left hands.

That is a fantastic price for a kit to make a really nice laser! Too bad they aren't 4x diodes ;)

Photo show!

I was thinking why not. This way you can have a look at the procedure and how I'm handling the diodes. (hobbyist talking, for the record).

This is my bench power supply (yes, a DIY)
Hpim4385_small.jpg

Multimeter for current, knimrod meter for optical power (in 0.1mW, decimal point is wrong) and MDA for recording data.
HPIM4384_small.jpg

Voltmeter, so I can see if the thermal equilibrium has been reached (voltage is very dependent on temperature. Well actually not that dependent, but this meter is just so accurate, lol)
Hpim4386_small.jpg

Test setup behind some shield. You can see the series resistor in the orange circle, and there is a tweezers stuck between the vises to keep them at an accurate distance.

Yes, I know, I really need to clean this shi#

Re: Feeler: Kryton 405nm building kits (>100mW)

I received the diodes today, and there is good news and bad news.

The bad news: there will be a change of plans. I tried to measure them when still in the sled, but it proves more difficult and dangerous than expected. Despite the thermal gluey stuff, even at moderate currents, the laser diode temperature slowly rises to about 50°C/120°F. It's not only the temperature that worries me, but even more the rate at which the heat is dissipated.

I will be harvesting most of the diodes and putting them in Aixiz for further testing. However, I do not (yet) have the means for extracting the diode from an Aixiz reliably without shattering the window. So I will be selling them installed in the Aixiz (along with the rest of the harvested sled) (harvesting for free). That is, unless someone explicitly states he wants unharvested, in which case I can drop one out of the testing batch, but the end product shall not be a certified 'Zom-B kit' for I can not give you the current to run it at. It would be no different than buying the parts yourself like people always do. (Respond quickly for this option)

The good news: A quick measurement led to a very rough rank of diodes, weak to strong, and I test-runned the one I think is the weakest (because it will dissipate the least heat at max current). The result: sweet spot @ 185mA !!! (although it's not the most efficient diode)
