Nothing under 200mW is NEEDED either, I was pointing out that practical uses for handheld lasers >500mW are extremely limited. At lower powers you can at least look at the dot w/o goggles. Not to say 5 min on staring at the dot of a laser >100mW on your wall is a good idea, but the fact that you can point without flash blinding yourself or burning your retinas expands the possibilities by far. I never will but a laser over 500mW in my lifetime simply because use is so limited I do not believe it is worth it. Its my opinion and other people may think differently. The OP made a good choice and so long as he has goggles for close up work he can still see the dot and beam at long range rather than skypointing whenever he wants a beam and possibly being caught by the police. Personally I would have gone for a LOC, PHR, or 150mW green for what he explained but that's just me.

Practical uses? Seriously?

Let's be honest about this. These are really just TOYS for the most of us. Nothing more and nothing less. The powerful ones are dangerous toys, but really no more than what a handgun can be.

The only video I saw recently that showed even somewhat of a practical application of a handheld burning laser was when a guy used it to burn a mosquito. Now THAT's a PRACTICAL application in my book! Can't wait to terrorize the flies and mosquitos around here myself.

Speaking of which, is there a thread anywhere on this site where people are itemizing actual practical uses of their lasers? I need to have them on hand for when my wife asks me that question.....

Well, they hsve many applications in physics and medical radiology as well as astronomy although that isnt a prefessional use really... What you pointed out about mosquitos is actually very ingenious and is being used to protect families from malaria worldwide. Look in the section "Science and Lasers" above Legal and Safety Issues. Dude just stop arguing, sometimes you dont know everything. I dont want to sound like a jerk but seriously. I pointed out that they can be used as "toys" but even as a hobby they arent really "toys".
