Default Looking for big hosts with some power!

I'm looking for a big host, that can supply power to a high power diode/driver for a new build that Darkarmyofone is doing for me. Over 1800mA capacity is what I need.

Is there anything out there that would be suitable?

Just to add, we were looking at MDXL hosts using THREE 10440 aaa 3.6v 600mA batteries, but I think that would be the bare minimum, so that idea has been shelved. We're now looking into CREE hosts and extension barrels. Not sure if the diver would fit in there though.

Default Re: Looking for big hosts with some power!

hosts dont supply the power.. if you mean a host that can accommidate say 4 AAA batteries (or what ever your using) the right person to talk to is probably jayrob, his got his stuff together and also sell hosts.. so he is probably the first place to start..

If you give us a bit more info im sure some one could chime in and give thier 2 cents on what they think would be appropriate!

Thanks, yeah.... I think Darkarmyofone is talking with Jayrob.

I'll point Darkarmyofone to this thread, so he can hopefully supply some more details. I'm not exactly sure myself!

It's going to be a high powered orange laser. somewhere around 632nm is what were shooting for.

We basicly need a host capable of fitting a MEREDITH module "the diode will be 9mm im sure" and needs to be able to fit enough batts in it. such as a CREE c3 with an extension barrell or two. the voltage isnt so much the issue, its the current.

And he knows the host doesnt supply power, he was just asking if anyone knew of a host capable of housing a large power source. this diode will most likely need at LEAST 1500mA.

So a DDL driver may be our only driver choice, unless a rckstr could handle it, but i dont know.. a rkcstr is just an SMT LM317 i do believe (BUT im not sure)! so correct me if im wrong.

we may need a host that can fit an LM317 with a small heatsink on the transistor.

Any thoughts anyone?

And yes I have spoken to Jayrob,

No offense but 632nm is still quite red, not orange. It will be more visible than the usual 650nm and a slighly brighter red, but still red. If you tell him it's orange he will be very disappointed when seeing the actual output colour.
Officially, red only goes down to 635nm, but most laser companies still advertise down to 630nm as red because it looks so red that anyone hoping for a nice orange colour will be disappointed.

yeah, he's picking out the diode, NOT me lol.

DIGITAL_BLUE, thanks, I knew it was something close to that.

We'll have to see if we cant get down into the 620nm range. 622nm sounds ideal, the lowest i've seen is 618 i believe? not sure, dont have the PDF open right now

Well I did want a lower wavelength, but I guess 1000mA lasing threshold current was a little over-optimistic

At that current how much mW's do you expect to get out of this diodee exactly? Sounds like its gonna be a burner!

Sorry, that should have been 750mA not 1000

The diode we are looking at now has a typical threshold current of 450mA and an operating current of 1000mA. The output power is listed as 250mW, so yes, I think it should be able to burn

Perhaps a custom driver would be the way to go, then we could have more host options, and it should also help with diode lifetime if it's designed specifically for one diode...

OK I'm glad you know
I just remember someone here getting disappointed by a 611nm (which is VERY orange), calling it red.. so if you were expecting a bright orange out of this one it would be better to know before buying it that it's not going to be such a huge difference from your usual 650nm.

I hope you find your host because it sounds like it's going to be a sweet laser! While the colour is not extremely different, visibility is actually quite significantly better.. and a very visible beam from a red/orange is rare!

I'm not sure if we will use that diode now. It hadn't occurred to me before, but it's a multi-mode diode. So I assume the beam quality will be pretty horrible?

It's annoying because that would have been one nice and highly visible beam like you said, but with a multi-mode beam I'm not sure that its worth it anymore! It's not a cheap diode...
