Hey I'm a complete novice laser user, just joined, for the exact reason you made your site, i want to know how to get a laser in aus. I'm looking for one that has a beam, like we used to be able to get and that astronomers use. Id prefer it to be not damaging to humans, I dont want to risk anything, it will be used purely for star gazing. I'm wondering if any of your 1mw lasers do this, and if not, what would i have to do to your laser modules to get them working? Sorry about the novice questions

1mW will not have a visible beam. The power of the beam (measured in mW) is partly responsible for determining how bright the beam is. The wavelength also affects brightness. Green is the brightest and at 1mW it'd have a barely visible beam, if it's visible at all. To get a really good visible beam you need to use powers that are typically unsafe for the eye.

Do you sell the correct modules that would generate such a beam? And how would I use these laser modules?

From experience with my 50mW 532nm Modules you can quite easily see the beam in dark areas and even more so clearly when pointing it into the sky (Especially in an area dark enough to see the stars).

As stated above generally 532nm lasers will be the brightest and also that being able to see the beam of the laser will generally render it unsafe if it is to hit someones eyes.

All the modules i carry are ready to go and you need only to supply 3 Volts DC (2xAA etc..).

I still have a few 100mW 532nm Modules left, these are of a much higher quality than the 50mW modules however they will use more power and pose a greater hazard so keep this in mind.

Please keep in mind your local laws when implementing these modules into your designs.

Wait so all i need to do is connect the laser to a power source? How is that safer than us just buying them outright hahaha. What one would you recommend for what i intend to do, the 50mw or the 100mw?

Yes thats Autralian laws for you, you cant import a Pointer thats 5mW but you can have as many 1 Watt modules as you like.

Both the 50mW and 100mW modules will both do the trick, 100mW will be substantially brighter but the 50mW will still be clearly visible anyway, the 100mW will likely last longer as its a larger brass module with a better driver and has the added benefit of containing an IR Filter so that you'll have very little leakage of IR light making the laser slightly safer (You only have to worry about visible light in this case).

Price wise its around $14/50mW and $24/100mW, if this is going to be your first time experimenting with a laser module i might recommend that you take the 50mW as its a lower power and less costly to replace in the event of it being damaged and although i dont supply them i'd recommend that you look into getting a pair of laser Safety Glasses.

It varies from State to State in Queensland-- The possession and use of a laser pointer with an output greater than 1 milliwatt is restricted to persons with a genuine reasonable excuse. A reasonable excuse is defined in the Act and allows members of recognised astronomical organisations and people who have genuine occupational reasons to have possession of a laser pointer with a power output of less than 20 milliwatts
