My groove2 arrived in excellent condition.....

Hey, I put a 12X on the end of one of these and dialed it up ALMOST all the way and the current was 675mA! I thought these only went up to 600mA? What's the deal? Mine goes up to 700mA+

Extra current range is added at the top and a little at the bottom end to make sure that you can adjust it to at least the specified level, even with some manufacturing and resistor variations. I always suggest setting the current via measurement, not relative pot position.

Re: Introducing two new miniature drivers for portable lasers + Kenom Fundraiser!

Good to know. So should I expect most of these drivers to go up to 700mA? what is the variation in max current between driver to driver?
I usually measure the current before I attatch the diode but in this case I wanted the current at 600mA so based on the specs you had provided I did not feel the need to. Perhaps it might be more accurate to post the variation on your website instead of listing the current as "XXmA to 600mA" something like 650mA +or- 50mA. or whatever it may be. Don't get me wrong I love this driver and I am very happy that it does exceed 600mA. It just would have been nice to have that info posted somewhere.

did your laser die due to the driver going up that high?

I agree with documenting guaranteed specs, possible specs and possible variations.

No my laser is just fine. I lowered it to where I wanted it. On full charged CR123A batteries it is now set to 596mA . I will report back on how well the current maintains as batteries die.

is this driver the micro boost or the groove2?

Re: Introducing two new miniature drivers for portable lasers + Kenom Fundraiser!

Yes the groove 2.
Update:
I tested the current at 8.5V to be 596mA (with 12x diode attatched)
Tested at 8V to be 550mA (with 12x attatched)
should this be expected?

Re: Introducing two new miniature drivers for portable lasers + Kenom Fundraiser!

Thank you. drlava.

Groove2 is especially adequete for infrared diodes!
5.6mm 780, 808, 980nm 150-300mw diodes are powered by one Li-ion.

But unlike microboost driver, groove2 and flexdrive are positive regulation. So, I have a host insulation problem from the module in case-positive diode.
780nm diode pinout is like LOC.

Are you saying that your 12X is pulling greater than 8V at the battery?

8.5V - 1.2V = 7.3V at the diode? (596mA)
8V - 1.2V = 6.8V at the diode? (550mA)

Peace,
dave

I can't see the pot for the groove 2... It has to have one, also Dr. I'm throwing a PM at you real soon. Thanks in advanced.

Let me try to clarfy that.
I tested the batteries voltage to be 8.5V.
When using those batteries with the laser turned on the current running through the laser is 596mA
I tested another set of batteries to be 8V.
When using those batteries with the laser turned on the current running through the laser is 550mA.

I got it. Even with the battery source being more than 8V, the output current appears to be correlated with the voltage of the batteries. As battery voltage increases, so does current.

Have you checked the Vf at the diode at the above currents?

dave

Exactly! and no I have not checked the Vf at diode. What are some high and low Vf readings you've taken on 12X diodes? I am wondering if it is possible that this diode could just have an especially high Vf.
