interest guage....

I want to know what the interest level is for IR lasers, specifically 808nm.  I have the unique opportunity to purchase some colliminated, portable 808nm handhelds in the 500mw power range, for right at $500.00.  They come with a 6 month warranty, all the safety features that are FDA required and take "C" cell batteries.  These lasers are manufactured by CNI.....Picture posted below...

Is this the same as the "Hades" series from laserglow?

No - the wavelength is different - that is the only difference I can see, myself. Theirs is 1064, this one is 808nm.

are you doing a group buy on these or something? or do you just want other people's input before you buy one?

Not really a group buy - but I can get just about any quantity on these, so if someone is interested, and can buy one, I will order them all at the same time.

Do you suppose both frequencies are totally invisible?.. or is there alittle color with any... I would guess the lower freq would be easier for our eye to catch some harmonics or something.. but I don't know.

I am pretty sure both are invisible.

Yes - both are invisible - although if you watched my vid entitled, "Dangerous Demo" it shows a TINY red flourescence (spelling ?) on the targeted item...in that particular case, a match. So - you MAY be able to barely see a faint red glow on the target, but I cannot say for sure until I see one in action !

SenKAt --
You can buy a 500 mW 808nm for about $20 on flebay. They are mostly invisable but will burn stuff.
My "little yag: should be here tomorrow :)
Have goggles - will Lase !!!!

I think total invisibility would be a bit unnerving and freaky.. but if I could see it just a little bit.. I could be interested....

It kinda opens up a whole new world of practicle joking when the beam is invisible!

To my eyes, 808nm is visible as a deep red. Not visible at all when unconcentrated, so when it diverges it becomes invisible, but in a concentrated dot some of the high power ones easily beat those 1mW red pointers.

This is NOT the Hades though. The Hades is a DPSS laser with good beam specs that match the Aries. These 808nms are based on bare diodes, and have horrible beam specs. I don't remember the specs on these off the top of my head but I believe it was in the order of 6mm at aperture and <5mRad divergence. That said, they make interesting burning lasers, and I have some pen size 350-400mW ones that make great portable burning lasers.

Also, if anyones interested, I can probably get these for a lower price than $500. I don't want to be competing with SenKat or anything as he's a great guy, so I'm not posting this as a general offer or anything, but feel free to e-mail me if you want to discuss this. These lasers also come in up to 700mW version BTW.

In the short time I"ve known Senkat.. I estimate he just likes to do his best to propagate laser fun!

I too would want to share the find if I could take advantage of a great deal.... but if there are better deals, lets make them availiable!

700mw...... HUMM!... can it cook my breakfast in 20 seconds?
