Welcome to the forums!

I second the idea of a 5mW 532nm laser. If you are used to low power red and purple lasers, you will be amazed how much brighter green is.

For anything over 5-10mW, you will need protective eyewear. If you plan to use it exclusively without glasses, you should get one with a known low output. The ebay lasers can be a lot more powerful than they say (enough to be dangerous, but still labeled as 5mW). If you buy one from there, you should probably have it metered so you know what you are dealing with. It would be pretty crappy to buy a "5mW" laser which is actually outputting 80mW and damage your eyes because of it.

If you get a green laser, IR filtering is also a good idea. Green lasers work by turning infrared light into green light, but some of it gets through. IR light can be very damaging to your eyes, and you cant see it, so you may not know how much is actually there.

I would recommend spending a little more than $10 and getting a good quality, IR filtered laser with an actual known output.

Have fun and be safe!

Re: Buying: ~1W laser, USA, Have ~$115, or build website.

If you are going for beam, green is the best bet atm. A ~100mw green can easily outshine a 1w blue in terms of beam brightness, due to the fact that green is more visible per watt. And a 100mw green should fit your budget.

Also, if you are looking to beam only, you will need to remember that in order to see the beam directly (not through a camera or the like), your goggles will have to be off. Hence, it is a good idea to ensure the laser is properly fixed so it cannot roll off and cause an accident.
