At 2.5 V that's better than 3-to-1! This means very little heat dissipation as opposed to some other diodes (like Blu-Ray :-?). That is definitely a very good thing 8-)

By the way, speaking of the Vop, any voltage above the operating voltage simply dissipates into heat, right? So... for ideal conditions, diode voltage needs to be at or very well near 2.5V... do I have this all wrong? I knew I should have paid more attention in my electronics class :P

Thanx;
DDL
Let's put it this way. The diode will dissipate heat at 2.5 volts, and also remember we are not running these with pulsed power. The higher the voltage, the more heat dissipation. The key is to keep the diode as cool as possible or the diode will heat up to the point it starts to drop in output. This has been my experience with diodes I have worked with.

The specs on these do look nice. With an operating voltage of 2.5v the current will be around 130ma, with an output of 80mw cw. So with a current of 300ma., if properly cooled these diodes should easily deliver around 200mw cw. These seem to have a better efficiency than the ones I have experimented with. Where the current to output ratio is 3/2 for these, most of the ones I have seen and worked with have had a ratio of 2/1. Since SenKat has samples, perhaps he can confirm this but I do doubt the Sony specs are wrong. However note the temp on the specs of 25C or 77F.

for those of you looking to build your own lasers with this diode you can follow the basic instructions I've got here at this post to build your own. http://www.laserpointerforums.com/fo...num=1181635652 Now, in the post it shows you which module to buy and where. The only problem I'm seeing with using the dorcy mini for this is the voltage and amperage is higher than what the diode needs so you're going to need to build another driver for this. I'm currently looking for a driver board that will work for this pre-assembled. Maybe someone can make us one and sell them to us.

Just to make sure its understood, I want to clarify that these are not CW 250mw diodes. That is for quasi-CW pulsed operation in DVD burners. Running these diodes at 250mW continuously is probably safe if you cool them well enough, BUT doing so IS overdriving them any way you look at it.

That said, its a great deal and I too would like to thank SenKat for putting his own finances on the line for organizing this. I'm in for 5

Okay... So... This is an outrageous deal... I think I am in for 3! And I certainly hope we have enough interest for <100!!!

I will have to get my dad to send a paypal tonight... He will wonder why I want 3 diodes for one laser!! LOL!!!

Mostly... I need a spare diode, plus, a spare spare diode!

Psuedo, Yes it's understood at least by me that these are not cw 250mw diodes. I believe they are rated 80mw CW and pulsed at 250mw. I actually would love to find the right driver board wth a POT on it so that I can adjust the current from 130ma to 350ma so I can adjust the output whenever I want. I know I'm dreaming that one is going to be premade and whatnot but hey. I'm a dreamer. I own lasers. I dream of a herc someday!

Yes that site is the right site for the modules. Your looking for the 650nm 5mw 12mm X 30mm full brass case $4.50 USD The only other thing your gonna want is to put a heatsink around the module and a driver board of some sort. I'm currently looking for an innexpensive one.!

Another option you have is to go with the mounting from merideth. Link: http://www.mi-lasers.com/cgi-bin/sho...rchResult.html and you will need the adapter for it here: http://www.mi-lasers.com/cgi-bin/sho...rchResult.html. This will give you a LAB LASER style instead of a pointer.

I have made something similar to that to drive an IR laser... then I lost interest. I used my old P4 heatsink. I drilled a hole into it and I have enough collimating lenses. I was thinking of making a crew-thing so the collimating lens fits into the heatsink like that. The plan was to use an AixiZ collimating lens since they come in a screw kind of package already. The heatsink could be made to fit it using the right drill bit :P I lost interest in IR later though... It's still just sitting there taking up some room and collecting dust on my work table from a few months ago...

Do I need a driver board? It says on the page with the modules, "ALL UNITS ARE COMPLETE LASER MODULES JUST ADD POWER!"

If I don't use a heatsink will the diode immediatly die, or will I just have to stick to a duty cycle?

Well... The diode will have to be in something to collimate it I assume... That should give you some heatsinking, so you will have to use a duty cycle. The main thing to note here is that the driver board will not come with the diode. This is what a few of us are working on. To get something small enough to fit into a flashlight would be quite a challenge. To get it that small and have it regulate voltage and current and be able to dissipate it's own heat is yet another... The truth is that this would run just like any other diode using the DIY that Kenom made. That will be dissipating too much heat thought because the diode will be overdriven voltage-wise. It shouldn't kill the diode for a very long time though unless you decide to keep it on indefinitely like a labby-style thing

I'll probably add a tiny resistor to take away the extra voltage. It will add some heat dissipation but it's a very easy fix. (please note, the value of this resistor is determined by your circuit + your specific diode... )

GL and hope that helps clarify things up a bit;
DDL

You will need a heatsink to get any kind of power out of the diode. You could run it at 80mw CW in the module fine with a duty cycle and probably not have any problems. You will need a driver board for it though. The problem with the driver board that comes with the Aixiz module is it's not rated for that high of current. It's putting out a lot lower as the diode itself is only a 5mw diode. This is a 250mw diode or 80mw cw. it requires a bit more current than the 5mw diode that comes with the Aixiz.

Merideth does sell a driver board that will work for this! *problem is it's expensive as HELL! *$49.00 it will fit into a pen style laser barrel.
http://www.mi-lasers.com/cgi-bin/sho...rchResult.html

I'm also looking at a driver board for a LED flashlight that might work with a little modification.
http://dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3160

Since I am not that electrically knowledgable I'm having to ask other's if the driver boards I've mentioned will be sufficient. *I will let everyone know when I find out more.

Kenom,

That driver board in the Dorcy flashlight is designed to run a 1 Watt Luxeon LED. It should be a buck/boost driver outputting a constant 350 mA of current. It worked with your other DVD Burner LD. So buying one of these flashlights nets you a driver board and a housing.

Not sure if 350mA will kill these LD's though, even with good heatsinking.

The first board doesn't tell you what the output voltage is, the second board I think would be great... Especially the way they have it pictured with nothing on there except for the ramp chip and the diode :P I was thinking of working on one these... I'll have to do it sometime considering I have a few lying around gutted from other flashlights
