Thanks for sharing.

I find it a bit expensive for something you
can build for ~$50.00...

in materials maybe...but, for example the sphere in aluminum is very difficult to find, and the entire stuff took many hours to assemble :)

I agree.... It is very nice for someone that doesn't
want to take the time to build one...

I had built one many years ago and I used two 10" round
metal bowls for the sphere... ~$10.00..

The static transfer belt was made from a used Bicycle inner
tube...

The rest of the parts are a small electric motor... some pulleys
a base and simple non conductive wooden tower....;)

hmm I am thinking for all you folks that play with diodes would not want one near them at all. I hated how as a commo guy I had bad esd issues but now I don't.

I went though 113 mini mag light diodes working in Iraq

they look scary from an esd standpoint,

Nope :) it's my fault, on ebay i have a different nick!!
BTW I agree...it's always better to build the selfmade things. This was assembled by me, long time ago, and it was not easy.

honestly guys, to really get some static volts happening, you really need to replace that weedy electric motor with one of these:

spt5v3.jpg

50-165K Rpm. And it comes with a cool little gearbox that drops it to 1500-7000 rpm. And it makes noise, lots of it. (its a turboshaft model jet engine). You'd better have good bearings in your VDG :)

Imagine - a VDG with performance like a tesla coil - for about 6 seconds before the bearings rip themselves apart ;)
