No, but with these we don't really have a choice. A thinner beam will be brighter because of the energy being more condensed. Thicker beam has the photons more spread out so the distance between the photons is greater, thus the photons light doesn't support eachother as well so its less bright.Wesdaman14 said:

True, however, it also makes for better divergence, hence the term "beam expander" because a wider beam can be better focused to infinity then a thinner beam.
