Based upon Rog's design, I set about making a laser lighter as one of those "would it be possible" projects.

Tweaking the concept slightly and improving various aspects I came up with the finished project. It was made nearly 6 months ago, but has never been used since, so after a summer clear out I thought I'd sell it.

The laser has several custom milled and turned parts and all are squeezed into a genuine zippo lighter.
It's powered by two lithium batteries (600mAh capacity in total), and is a 660nm SenKat red running at an easy 180mA (a good 150mW output). You could easily pop in any diode (LOC or otherwise) and get 300mW+ out of it. However I used what I had at the time.
It is driven by a FlexDrive

The focus is set to about 2" for spot on burning just on the tip of the cover.
There is a socket underneath to charge the unit, for which I have build a separate USB charger in a separate box of tricks. So you can charge the lighter from any USB port!

But the best part (well I think so) is the magnetic proximity switch! Just pop a small magnet near the back end and 'click' you're on!
I don't smoke so can't fully test it, but it seems to light matches damm quick!

The price is £100
Shipping to the UK (RoyalMail Special Delivery - Next Day) is £5
Shipping to anywhere in the world (Royal Mail Airmail 3-5 Working Days) is £5; with an optional £4.50 surcharge for tracking (2-4 Working Days)
Payment to be made via PayPal

Any questions, feel free to ask...

Regards,
Dan

Those are some crazy long diode pins in pic 5 :D On another note, that laser is very nice. It goes to show that theres talent everywhere

Oh and what company of module is used? (color of the metal makes it look like a Meredith but I think those are bigger...)

Well...
It's still for sale, so BUMP!

All offers welcome (in any currency! £, €, $! ;))
The price listed at the top is very negotiable.
Like I said, it's been sat in a drawer for several months, so I'd like to sell it and see it go to a good home and put to some use.

There is nothing to stop you from pressing out the diode and putting in a LOC to get 300mW+. You would just need to tweak the pot on the driver (obviously!)

Yes, all those parts were custom made from aluminium and brass, apart from the zippo ;)

Go on you know you want to! :D This is a one of a kind item - and I'm not going to be making any more in the future...

Cheers,
Dan :)

Well where can I get aluminum for making heatsinks??

If you plan on machining some heatsinks yourself; make sure you buy 6083 (or 6061) alloy, preferably T6 grade. As this is best suited to machining, gives good strength and has good thermal conductivity.

Nice lighter - maybe you should buy some cigarettes though, so you can make sure that it lights them, cos if it doesn't it is useless as a "laser lighter"

NOT 2B a wackie jackie, but for less than a quid, one can get tonnes of matches to burn up one's lungs with coffin stchicks. Aside from that, according to Murphy's Law, one can pop an eye. Or to.

This, coming up from a non-smoker.

The bling is interesting, however. Kudos.

Hope it sells to a "safe" smoka.

Agreed... :)
But this was one of those sledge hammer for a walnut projects.

Not quite Rube Goldberg; but along those sort of lines. ;)

Rudolf Diesel went the other direction, inventing the diesel engine, after observing the non-savvy Indo-Asians making fire with bamboo tubes.

Thermogawdarn it, he sd, and the diesel engine was born. The modern fire piston.

Hope your unique fire lighter sells, to a wise user.
