Yes of course! 8-)

A green Kryton is a must have! This kit gives good heatsinking to the module, and the kit will last a lifetime... The swapping out of green modules is very easy. It can be done in a matter of minutes!

And again, the barrel is perfectly fine for building a red or blu-ray at some future time, if that is something you decide to do...

Jay, I asked because I have a module on the way and was going to put it into a WL Core; but thought that the Kryton would be better for heat dissipation. I saw the Kryton kit that you offered and thought that it looked like a build that I was actually capable of; so I considered buying a kit from you and using the PHR module.

Yeah that's not the way the barrels I made were designed. They were designed to bypass the need for a module.

Well, the green kit is a piece of cake... It can be done by a complete beginner, in a matter of minutes!

But a blu-ray or red Kryton build takes a little more building experience. You will need to understand how to set current on the FlexDrive using a proper test load. Other than that, it is pretty simple too...

I have a very nice kit for a red or blu-ray build that I call my 'Pocket Mini' if you have not seen it, take a look!

For a blu-ray build, I personally like the FlexDrive. This is perfect for a blu-ray or a red using the Kryton Groove and an 18650 battery. The diode would press directly into the Kryton head, which is threaded at the aperture for an AixiZ lens nut!

It's just a matter of mounting the driver. Here is a picture of a commonly used way to do so:

This method uses the barrel for the negative path to the driver, by connecting the diode case pin, to the diode negative pin, and then the diode connects to the driver negative. (this is all that is needed for a FlexDrive - both negatives on the Flexdrive are continuos) For an 18650 supply, the silicon diode is not needed. This is only needed for 2 X 3.0 volt batteries to drop voltage. Because the FlexDrive is rated for a max voltage supply of 5.5 volts.

With a red diode, the diode case pin is already the negative pin, so the negative connection from the battery (host), is made to the driver via the diode connection...
Jay

Jay, I will have a complete module. How would this change things? (As you can probably tell, I am a beginner). Your guidance is much appreciated. Thanks, Bill

Did you get a complete module with a rkcstr driver already set from daguin?

If that's the case, your best bet would be a 3405 host. That would be your easiest build for it. This is a host that you buy from DX that takes 3 X AAA batteries. But if you have a rkcstr driver, you would use 2 X 3.6 volt 10440 batteries and a blank. Or, check with rkcstr to see if his driver can take 12.6 volts of supply. Because that is what 3 X 10440 batteries will be at full charge.

Anyway, I have a 3405 host that I would sell with a heatsink for $38 plus shipping...
Jay

P.S. See here for how this host and heatsink look finished off. Also, there are two different versions of the heatsink. Both have plenty of mass. It's just a matter of how you want the finished look of your build to be:

The 3405 is in my opinion the easiest way to turn your module into a hand held laser. It's not quite as ***y as a Kryton, but the Kryton would require some significant customization to be able to use one of these module in.

The 3405 has plenty of room and the heat sinking provided by Jayrob's heat sink in this build is massive. Not much need for a duty cycle here. The 3405 is the build I recommend to most beginning builders. $38 + shipping is a great price for this host, a Jayrob heat sink, and shipping from within the US

Peace,
dave

Jay, I have a complete module (PHR-803T) with a fixed rkcstr driver. I would definitely like to purchase this host. I like the look of the version 2 heat sink the best if that is possible. Do they actually sell blank spacer batteries? I think that I've seen people also jump the third battery compartment instead. I'll send you a PM with my info. Thanks for you guidance Jay, thank you also Dave! Bill

These ARE available. *However, I use the VERY TECHNICAL *and HIGHLY ADVANCED procedure by which I cut an appropriate diameter bolt to the correct length to fit the "empty" slot. *

They are probably free in your garage somewhere (or your neighbor's garage).

Some people will solder a wire "jumper" across the contacts in the "empty" slot.

Peace,
dave

Another thing worth mentioning about your 3405 build, is that I usually only use the business end of the AixiZ module for the heatsink. This is all that is needed...

But since you have your driver mounted inside the AixiZ module, you will need the entire module in tact. This means that because of the length, you may have to drill or grind out the top of the pill. The threaded aluminum piece in the host where the LED emitter is mounted.

Then there would be lots of room...

But since you have your driver mounted inside the AixiZ module, you will need the entire module in tact. This means that because of the length, you may have to drill or grind out the top of the pill. The threaded aluminum piece in the host where the LED emitter is mounted.

Then there would be lots of room...

Jay, I'm not exactly certain that I know where you mean; but I'll assume that it would allow the module to go further up in the pill? Would I just be increasing the diameter or actually widening and deepening? Thanks, Bill

I haven't built one of these for awhile, but IIRC there is enough room in the 3405 for the whole module. *The 4171 needs to have the rear portion shortened (or left off), but the 3405 is fine.

This may be different with the second "version" of the heat sink, but the first version protrudes out the front a bit. *This adds available length to the host.

Peace,
dave
