If you had to heatsink just one side, go with the resistor side. For the DX copper heatsinks use the flatside ... personally I would remove their sticky stuff and use arctic alumina so I can fill in the spaces between ans around the resistors. Be careful not to short the resistors though, use plenty of epoxy and don't press down all the way.

How do you short the resistors? don't wanna do that...

So really just take the sticky stuff off, throw some arctic silver on it, and just press the driver to the heatsink? That was my plan

Yup ... just don't press it so hard to the resistors that the heatsink makes contact with their metal tabs.

I should of bought some of those copper heatsink things, their pretty cheap but since my dad has already pretty much payed over 300 dollars just for me to make a few lasers i dont think it would be wise asking for more :D lol I have an awesome Dad :)

I would pay him pack but he wont accept it....

i was also gonna buy some artic silver of fleabay but the seller only shipps to the US how racist :p

i will just drop by my local PC shop and pick myself up a 5g tube for 14 bucks

Ok ... I know some of you are clamoring for these, so you guys get first dibs on them before I put up the FS thread. This driver is based on a LD1085 Low Drop Out regulator from STMicro rated for 3A. They are strictly set at 1.815A, and require 2x li-ion cells that can handle the the current draw (I don't recommend anything less than 2x18650s). These will need a nice chunk of metal to heatsink to, and I left plenty of copper area on the bottom layer to do so.

$15 each, limit 2 per person.



Oh ... a glimpse of the future:D:

What is the second picture (future pic)? Is it the same as the 1.3 and 1.8 drivers, but has adjustable ranges? I seem to remember you talking about these. Will they still require 2 Li-Ions? Thanks

yeeahh .. you bridge resistors together to select a "range"
and its still a linear driver.. not a boost driver so yes.. 2 cells

I have a fixed value buck/boost driver design but the parts are too expensive to make any significant quantities and its difficult to build by hand. I would have to charge a lot more than what other buck/boost drivers go for. :(

Bluuray is correct, it needs 2 cells for most anything except reds below 400mA. Those you can get away with a high quality low resistance cells. I havn't decided on a final mix of resistors ... I just put some that I had in my parts bin. It is based on the LM1117 chip.

Awesome, and I already made a build with the usual Aurora host that everyone uses...

But, the diode I had was a victim of ESD and I only found that out after I soldered everything up. Even though I used every precaution, it still died. Sad day...

what would happen if i used 3x 10440 3.7v 600mAH batteries? would i damage the driver or diode due to high voltage?
