You're right. You said "most of the forum."

I still posit that you do NOT represent "most" of the forum
I would posit that the "burning is lame" crowd represents an abject minority in the forum
The vast majority of members in this forum HAVE burned stuff and popped stuff and lit stuff on fire.
It is a very basic attention gaining process that brings in MANY (maybe most) members

As I said before, you have the absolute right to feel as you do.
It just does NOT constitute a majority of the members of this forum

My two main points here are
1) Your feelings are NOT representative of this forum
2) I suggested that you simply ignore those that come to you with "unacceptable" questions

Peace,
dave

And for that matter, where did I "generalize your feelings to the entire forum"? I don't believe I did that anywhere.

What you have to understand is that this is an FS thread, and there are two sides to a transaction. In addition to everything else, someone who is selling something needs to be comfortable with the buyer. Maybe some people on this forum don't take this as seriously - but I do. I frequently turn down sales to members who give me the impression that they don't have an appreciation for the power, danger, and appropriate safety precautions associated with high powered lasers.

Sorry Dave, but someone who jumps into a sales thread for a half watt laser and says nothing but point-blank "does this burn?" is not the type of person that I want to sell a high powered laser to. This has nothing to do with any frustration over "entry level" forum members, for I harbor no such frustration.

The vast majority of "entry level" forum members in fact DO search for knowledge themselves. Make no mistake, this behaviour of jumping in on an FS thread and saying "does this burn??" is not an "entry level member" characteristic. To suggest so, is demeaning to all the new members that actually DO evidence a real legitimate interest in researching and understanding this hobby.

I think you're really confusing what I've said, with what other people have said. My generalizations only ever preceded feelings about whether people should do their own research. That's why your comment really confused me. I never, not once, made any generalizations about burning (how many people did it, or how many people felt a certain way about it). Take a look back at the thread. You'll see that it was other people who said things like:

"Burners aren't really loved around here."
and
"Burning lasers are are taboo here because it seems that people who enjoy burning things TYPICALLY are irresponsible with their laser use."

Those weren't my comments. The only generalization that I made was the following:

"But I do, and I think most of the forum does, look down on new users that emerge and ask questions that are easily addressed with some independent research."

So you don't mind NooB's that are only interested in burning, lighting, and popping?

Your above quotation was predicated by your objection to a person asking about whether your laser would "burn" and started a "jump on the no burners" bandwagon
It was also in response to my statement that burning, popping, lighting were the "entry point" for most laserists

Context is everything

I am not going to continue this.

If I see statements about what this forum believes/feels and I see the statement as invalid, I will speak up.

In the meantime, feel free to be who you are

I'm pretty certain that if you look at the history of posts I've had, you'll find a few where I've presented videos of all three of those things (burning, lighting, popping).

Yes. Context is everything. So evaluate my comments in the context of the other things I have said. Don't evaluate my comments as some hybrid of what I've said, plus what others have said subsequently. It's absolutely crazy to shift the meaning of comments I make, because of the of "context" arrising from subsequent external comments that I have no control over.

I say what I say, and mean those things literally. Unless I make a mistake (which happens) my comments are generally straight-forward and clear. I'm not one of those forum members who inserts poorly veiled insinuations into my comments, or plants vague seeds of a thought and then trails off to let the meaning materialize in someone else's head without every being explicit enough to be called on......

I try to be a straight forward literal person and say exactly (often bluntly) what I'm getting at. I wish everyone had this approach to communication. It's the internet, we don't have the benefit of seeing others face-to-face after all, so anything short of literal communication is not efficient.

But the corollary of that is that my comments should be taken as what they are, and not as some mutated hybrid of my comments plus a whole bunch of external stuff I don't control.

Bottom line: What bothers me is when people evidence (by asking the most basic easily-searchable question) the fact that they don't have enough respect for lasers to do their own very simple independent research. That evidences a type of character that I wouldn't want living next door to me with a high powered laser in their possession. It was exactly that type of easily-searchable question that instigated this whole line of discussion, and it was this concern that I have repeatedly (and without waiver) explained as being my issue here. You continue to ascribe to me some mentality other than the one that I actually have. You've said that I'm free to be who I am, but then in the same post persist in suggesting that I AM someone other than who I am (or at the very least, think something other than what I think).

RHD has a lot of wonderful friends that trust his measurements enough to make parts for him host-sight-unseen.
