At 1750VDC you are right at the bottom edge, but they will run on it.

The 14in bare tube "wants" ~2.1KVDC, but I have run them with 1.75KVDC

Keep in mind that the bare tube HeNe's will need ballast resistors inline. The tubes in the housings include the resistor in the housing

Peace,
dave

Like dave said keep an eye on ebay. I got a Hene head and psu for $40 unused 2 weeks ago! Just gotta keep an eye out ;)

I'm not Daguin but that most likely will work with the HeNes in the OP, but will not for the 14". You'll need around 2300V for the 14" HeNe. And also if you do buy that power supply I would recommend hooking up a 1Amp fuse to it.

@Daguin, Do you happen to have any more tubes in the 6"-7" range that have more plasma exposed?

I have to unpack the box with my tubes and see if they survived the move.

How much are you asking ea pc?

I have 5 empty housings:
one @ 10in (L) x 1.75in (dia)
three @ 9.25in (L) x 1.25in (dia)
one @ 6.75in (L) x 1.25in (dia)

They do NOT all have all the end caps. If any of these will work for you, I'll match up what I have in the parts bag, but you may have to fabricate one or both end caps.

Peace,
dave

Sorry. This is what I have on hand for now.

That is a scary thought

You can have these for the cost of shipping. I almost threw them into the recycle bin.

Dave, not the recycle bin... Thats an upsetting thought.
You've made me an offer that I cannot refuse.

I have looked on ebay for 'empties' or dead
tubes, but never found. I will have a look for the tubes in the morning when im less clumsy,
just in case they are all good... :)

Ill PM for the details.

Thanks!!

Sorry.

This will be the only "bump" for these. After this, I will just place them in stock and sell them at normal prices.

I might PM you later about the 14 in tubes, since I'm kinda low on money right now (comes with being in college) :undecided: I do want to eventually make a HeNe laser lamp though.

I have one more reserved and another one available

Damn....I forgot all about this thread....which ones do you still have available Dave? Also, I'm extremely ignorant to gas lasers. What are the balast resistors needed for? I'm kind of leaning towards bare tube, but I heard you can get shocked really bad if you touch it while it's powered. Is that true?

There is a little of everything left. The plasma in the tube acts like a short. Resistance is needed to prevent a runaway.

Yes. They will bite you if you touch the wrong parts ;) The 14in bare tube above takes ~2000 Volts (DC). That will give you a shot  They will even give you a shock AFTER the power is turned off. The act as a capacitor.

Well, I've gotten shocked by a few things in life and needless to say each experience sucked. How would I go about handling these in a manner that would not shock me? I'm imagining the glass tube gets hot.

When "working" with them, only use one hand at a time and wear rubber soles. When "using" them, build an enclosure of some type which protects the conducting parts. (or be very careful) ;)

At only ~6mA even 4KVDC won't kill you, but it may cause you to drop (or throw) your tube! (Which would probably be bad)

Hmm. I'm interested, but now I want a bare tube one so I can see the plasma. Which ones are available from the original picture you posted?

The four bare tubes from the OP are still available. Most people have been inquiring about the 14in bare tubes because they are thinking about building lamps. The plasma exposure is not long in those four, but at $20 (shipped), they are still pretty cool. IMNHO the two "larger" ones in the OP are the coolest looking. I have one of these in my personal collection. I don't think that anyone is building HeNe's with these rear terminals anymore.

Peace,
dave
