SOLD The last is brought here from an earlier thread. It is an improved rebuild of the famous Spyder III Arctic laser. You can read all about the modification here:

This is rebuilt from a failed Arctic. It is just the laser and battery. It does not have the lens set, charger, box, or goggles that originally came with the Arctic.

This has the MicroBoost driver. It is powered by a single 18650 battery. It is doing just over 1W with the AixiZ 445nm glass lens.

It is $250, shipped in the US

Hey! I just checked out an idea for the lasers with the jib77 driver. Since it is a linear driver, I tried them with primary CR123 batteries (3V). Using two CR123 (non-rechargeable) batteries, the lasers will put out ~350mW. If you want/need the laser to be less powerful for a time, you can just switch out the 16340 batteries :)

I do not think this is a problem for the driver. I'll ask Jib77 or maybe someone else could chime in here about this

2x 16340 = ~8V. 8V-4.5V(diode)=3.5V .... plenty of voltage left for the driver
2x CR123 = ~6V. 6V-4.5V(diode)=1.5V .... little voltage left for the driver and pushing those amps.

My guess is that with the 6V, there's not enough tension overhead to push all those amps.
That linear driver is running out of regulation when ther is not enough voltage, so you get less current.
If you were to measure the voltage between OUT and ADJ pin on the driver, I'll bet ya it will be 1.25V with the rechargeables,
but something less than 1V with the primaries.

I'm not 100%, but from my experience with the LM317, which is from the same family of ICs
and essentially works in the same way as jib's driver, there is no harm.
In fact, it only runs on "small flame" and doesn't heat up as much.
If all of this I'm saying is correct though, you will have the effect that current delivered
will decrease directly as the batteries discharge and their supplying voltage consequently lowers...

I know that we are all in lust with >1W ZOMG! :drool:

However, the vast majority of the time >1W is just too freakin bright to use for most applications. To be able to simply tone it down with the swap of a set of batteries would be very useful.

If all you are saying is correct, then the laser would operate much like an old incandescent flashlight did. It will just get dimmer until the batteries drain, eh?

At least that's how my "porta-labby" 445nm running on a LM317 and 2x18650 does it.
When the batteries are getting depleeted it will just go dimmer and eventually stop lasing
alltogether by the time each battery has about 3.0V left.
jib's driver has a lower dropout than LM317, so it will keep going a little longer.
