Unfortunately so. Many people coming to this site, see all these wonderful high powered lasers that can blow crap up, make your dreams come true, and make cool lightsaber beamies. Those people (usually younger) say hey, how can I get that, for less than that$$??

Just call up anybody similar to sparkles, to build you a crappy laser!

Well at $270 a pop, I wouldn't exactly call his the cheapest of the cheap, either. Well, not in price anyway. But certainly in build quality though. Sparkles was obviously only trying to make a buck over everything else, which I don't really have a problem with so long as your not just giving people total crap for their money, which also, apparently was.

Yeah, I didn't mean to make it sound like he was selling these at cost of parts+shipping lol. His setup can be had for ~$150-175 I'm fairly positive. So making at least $100 on each build x 20 lasers? I'd say he made off with a nice $1500+ for his what 2 month? stay here.

Excuse my french, but what a dick.

OR some wire that wasn't 99 cents for 100 feet down at the local radioshack. I bought some of that audio hookup wire or whatever the first time I wanted to do a build, and then saw flaminpyro wire, and then got some, and was like, holy shit. How would I have ever done this with that crap?

I think he was probably making more a long the lines of $150 off each one personally.

Default Re: FS: 1.8-2W 445nm Maglite 2C Laser!

I got my Jayrob 3D build last week and have been loving it! Having taken apart the sparkler to rehabilitate it, I have a better appreciation for the quality in Jay's work. From being able to disassemble the heatsink from the host without a hammer and chisel to not having to watch out for shock & short hazards from twist-tied wiring, to having a battery spacer that allows me to change out batteries just as easily as I could in the original host (without having to get out my duct tape and weather stripping, as was the case with the sparkler), its easy to tell who knows what they're doing and who the hack is. I mean, Jay actually uses solder and shrink wrap for his connections! What a concept! I'm still pretty ticked that I let that weasel, Sparky, take my money, but I learned quite a bit rebuilding his disaster laser.

JayRob, thanks for living up to your reputation and making me one mutha of a build.

I'm new to this community and could have easily been turned off by my experience with sparky, but my interactions and dealings with folks like JayRob, Dave, FlaminPyro, and bhwollen showed me that there are plenty of guys here who have integrity, are dedicated to advancing others' interest in this hobby, and can make some great stuff. Thanks guys!

Default Re: FS: 1.8-2W 445nm Maglite 2C Laser!

You are correct. He set my host up with driver, heatsink, and battery spacer. I bought the Aixiz and diode from Dave, and I bought my own batteries. When I received my host, I soldered the diode in, and installed the Aixiz into the heatsink.

So, I'll update my remarks. Great job to Jay for an awesome kit! I'll also commend him for great communications. I've pinged him with several laser-building related questions over the past month, and he has gotten back to me within hours on each request.
