Well, nothing should die with a 9V. Im really are VERY curious as in why?? I tell you what right, next time i will also SUPER GLUE all the modules together so it cant be opened and well see if theres any more deaths on the blu ray table LOL ;D

Ch035n yes its hot because theres no working diode on the end of the driver. Also i've runned all these atleast 5 mins total not including cool down time. If its too much bother then i wont bother selling them anymore. dont make much but too much hassel. :'(

Humansymphony , NO they havent gone yet, cause i havent got any modules till today. but things will start moving along now. Also i still havent gotten the Barrel yet, where did it go??? lol and can you remind Kenom about the other black barrel, thanks

Actually, the reason it gets hot is because there IS a load on the other end, and the driver is a linear one. When a linear driver is working, voltage in is higher than voltage out. current in is the same as current out. Since power is voltage times current, that means more power goes into the driver, that comes out. Well, that's not entirelly true. The electrical power in is higher than elctrical power out. The rest of the power coming in gets converted to heat.

How hot the IC will get, depends only on this power difference. When a PHR dies, it stops being a diode, but becomes a resistor with a (broken) laser on it's back. When this happens, the voltage required for the set current is suddenly only around 3V, instead of the usual 5.4V a PHR needs when it's alive.

So when the PHR is a diode and is set to 125mA, the driver gets 9V x 0.125A = 1.125W from the battery, but puts out 5.4 x 0.125A = 0.675W, the difference is 0.450W, which is converted to heat by the driver.

When the same PHR turns into a resistor, the driver still regulates the current through it, gets 1.125W from the battery, but puts out 3V x 0.125A = 0.375W, and the difference, 0.750W is converted to heat by the driver. Because of that, the driver gets MUCH hotter, than it would under normal circumstances.

So the reason for the IC getting hotter is, that voltage into the driver is the same, but voltage out of it is so much lower, that it has to convert more of the power coming in, to heat, in order to keep the current constant.

Linear drivers can even regulate through shorts, but in that case, they get REALLY hot, since voltage out is barelly over 0V, and almost all of the power going into the driveer is converted into heat.

If there is no load, a linear driver simply maxes out at slightly below the input voltage, and passes no current and creeates no heat.

That might not be a good idea. Unless they are to be discardable once the diode dies.

The shrink wrap on them is not a bad idea tho. For PHRs at 110mW it doesn't really matter, cos they don't create a lot of heat.

Obviously it has to be removed before turning it into a laser, but a good policy would be, that the module has to be tested with the shrink wrap on it, and if it dies the buyer gets a new diode, if the shrink wrap is untouched. Once the buyer is happy that the module works, they can remove the shrink wrap and install it into a laser, but once they do that, the warranty expires.

A "warranty void" sticker would be another option, again it would have to be removed for installing into a heatsink, but the buyer could still verify it works before that.

Default Re: **F/S**BR/RED with driver in Aixiz Module $40

I forgot to explain this part.

It is physically imposible for less power to come out of the driver, than what comes in. But electrical power out IS lower than electrical power in. Total power out of the driver is still THE SAME as the electrical power into the driver. But since only a part of the power comes out as electrical power, the rest of the power comes out as heat. Pin = Pout

So linear drivers regulate the current by converting everything, except for what the load needs, into heat. In fact in most cases, a linear driver will create more heat, than the load. A 317 powering a red diode from two Li-Ions will convert one of the two batteries and a part of the other ONLY to heat. And that's under normal operating conditions..

Hot glue on the pot can alter the current output by "moving" things as it cools.

Peace,

Well, if you understand the potential issues with pots, they can easily be avoided.

I prefer using stiff pots, that are hard to turn. Those are actually easier to dial in correctly, and they don't move afterwards. On flimsy pots, i set the current, then (while still on the dummy), i tap on the pot with the handle of a tiny screwdriver. Not too hard, but just enough, that if there is any tension making the pot want to move, it will release it and it will move to the final setting. If the current changes, then i re-set it. If it stays put, then all is good, and it will not move during transport.

Sealing pots is otherwise common practice in many electronic devices. But usually some sort of epoxy is used. The most important part is, that you check the current after the seal has hardened. Also, whatever you are sealing the pot with should not go inside on the resistive layer. It should only hold the wiper in place.

Bluray,

I spotted that someone in the UK got theirs in a week.
I've been waiting for double that (only just, though!) :P

Please say it's en route either already or soon . . . . :'(

All modules that are shipped are on the 1st post, Unshipped ones will be out on monday.

The aixiz problem caused abit of delay, so im sorry for that, but now i got everything, and everythings back on track.

Joeyjojojjjjj yeah i got that pm, but the stupid site doesnt work properply because they cant find the shipping details to add to the amount. So im waiting for their reply.

And no, i wont fill it with epoxy, although it will make it solid, but like Igort said, wont be reuseable further down the track if the diodes dies or anything then it wont be able to be replaced.
