k finally got around to testing it and it worked. hacked away at a temp housing for it and got it up and going. it is working great!

just burned my first match with it :)

as i was about to take some pictures of it burning stuff and what not, i noticed it get dim so i tested my 9v only to find that the current is dropping like crazy. Imma have to get another battery tonight.
are 9v batteries famous for super crappy current?
at least this host is only temporary. Gonna try to get a nice host that can use my rechargable cr123 batteries.

EDIT AGAIN: ok found two more batteries to test with and they both hold their current. Maybe I won't mess with another host for now since it's a lot of work. Just beamed it into the night sky and it looks great.
thanks again bluray :)

cant wait for mine
i was messing around with my friends green pen laser out in the dunes where we ride and i was hooked. i just bought this blu ray and i have a xbox360 hd dvd coming this week to harvest and do a full build so i feel like i can fit in with all of you.

Question; is there a host that will fit a 9volt battery set up like this one. would like a clean flashlight look but my other plan was to use a small pelican case made for a ipod. i think i can fit a spare 9v it it also.

Enkryptik LOL thought it got lost. What was the date it was sent?? i forgot.

las_vegas you dont need to use a 9V batt, you can use other battery from 7-12V that would fit nto what you need.

I'll update the post now.

or there is another solution if you dont want to use 9V battery and it is ask BluRay for module with flexdrive V2 or V3... that's exactly what i did ;) ;) ;)

mine is in a violet purplish foggy clear case. figured it was somewhat appropriate for 405nm. may end up slapping the bluray labels provided with module onto this "temp" host even though i'm liking host more and more every time i use it...

i'll get some pics of it when i get home.

i still need to do more reading on batteries. i was going to leave this laser 9volt for now. and the one iam building ground up will be cr123 rechargeable.
steep learning curve to get up to speed on all the laser workings

well, bought a brand new 9v battery and hooked it up and it was roasting stuff like crazy for about 15-20 seconds, not even probably.
then, it flickered and then died. i hooked it up directly to battery and still nothing. Tested battery and there were no crazy currents or voltages.
I never took the heat shrink tubing off or anything so i dunno what happened. bad luck i suppose. fun while it lasted.

i may be done buying lasers for awhile cuz i'm broke and that was an expensive toy for 2 days of play lol.

had horrible day at work today and even though my laser is pronounced "dead" i may still upload pics of it in action and the host

EDIT: what is even more strange is that i just screwed with it again and it starts heating up the module and when it is really warm, the diode came on again but super dim.

EDIT2: just went out again wtf
what could cause this? i've tried many batteries.

It could have been many things.

1. A bad connection.
2. Too much current.
3. A short.
4. Static.

Many other things could've caused your laser to die.

i suppose but i had already grounded myself and was in middle of using it when it started flickering and stopped working. i tested all the solder joints that i made in my host and all were solid. the battery is connected to host by ample amounts of pressure.
are 9v batteries really bad about current spikes? cuz i tested battery and my switch area for continuity and all was well. however, i didn't open the module to see if something couldve been damaged from shipping as it seemed to work fine when i got it hooked to host.
sure did look brighter on a fresh 9v though

ahwell. sh*t happens.

Well, right that is strange. I've runned these phr for minutes on end and they are mush cooler then your average red long open can.

enkryptik i tell you what, PM me and we see what we can do about it. Im not a selfish guy, and it did took them ages to send it to you for couple of min play. and that wouldnt be fair.

The ones I got from Tommy heat up really quickly. I turn mine off when they start to feel hotish (certainly less than a minute). The modules start lasing around 5 V, so I tend to run them there with less total power but a more stable configuration.

I haven't cracked any of mine open, either, but perhaps the pot could be turned down a bit.

Houston we have a problem, received my module today and it seems to have died :'(

It seems that my module has kicked the bucket after a few minutes of use, its output is now extremely dim.

Any ideas?

well there could be heaps of reason, what battery did you use? how long did you run it for? did you allow cooling? Tried using new battery?

These new batch have been tested from a Direct AC source set to 12V. So even if your using a 9V batt. It would still not die. And i also didnt turn the pot all the way up. Using Low range drivers. So how it could die is beyond me.

To others that have bought modules also. Please dont use it to incorprate it into anything unless you have a good knowledge on how to do so. It only takes somthing small to kill the diode, So unless you done it before. Dont Do it!! If you are planning to put it into somthing else, then let me know before i ship it and i could let you know whats best for you application.
