Red Laser Module - Focused Dot (3.5V~4.5V 9mm 5mW) $3.11
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5900

These are probably cheaper than AIXIZ modules. The diode may be crap, but at $3 each it can be removed and saved for later.

Use code "BULKRATE" in checkout for multiple units.
Quantity 3+ units Rate
3+ units $2.52 shipped
5+ units $2.42 shipped
10+ units $2.32 shipped

I'll pick up one of each and provide feedback on what I come up with! Maybe AixiZ is getting some decent competition now ;)

It says 9mm - I presume that it takes a 9mm LD. Most reds are now 5.6 mm. a simple adapter will make it work. Are they glass or plastic ??

Hmm... didn't notice that... I think that that is the external measurement though. But either way I needed some 9mm modules. As about the material of the optics... no clue, sorry... I'll try to find out and let you all know though, but my guess is plastic since they're 5mW modules :-/

a small washer and some thermal epoxy should work just fine for mounting 5.6mm diodes in a 9mm housing.  Try it first with a burnt out diode to have a "proof of concept/test module"

you could even solder the washer in place with the diode out if you wanted... (once you tested for size) and then mount the washer with thermal epoxy. you'd have thermal and electrical conductivity.

It appears to be glass but it's so tiny we cannot verify it in-house.

Still waiting for a response from the manufacturer.

they also have new larger ones

Jeez! Those look extremely similar to the AixiZ modules! I like the ones with the Line and Cross optics though... I may cave and get a set of these too just to test them out. But they are quite pricey compared to AixiZ. :-/
