noice. however still being a bit behind in tech (it costs too much) I would keep that in my comp and harvest my old CDRW - DVD ROM for the high power IR diode.

I'm always too scared to look at the spot of the IR laser diodes I have... :-/

I was working on one just a little bit ago... It's powerful as hell, but I really can't tell anything without some kind of IR protection. I think I need to get some IR goggles... I need them to be cheap though :-? Can't find anything cheaper than $100+

You can always shield your eyes and look at the dot with a CCD camera through the blask bit of developed film negative. That allows the camera to see near IR and not much visible light.
That will at least tell you whether you need more IR protection.
Although, for a pure IR dot you might not need the visible light filter. Any CCD camera (webcam, phone camera) can see IR.

You could always go the reverse of using the 4 congoe blue, 2 primary red method of seeing IR and use a blue only filter. That will still allow you to see shapes and objects, in blue, but IR shouldn't penetrate it. If you use lighting gels (they are heat resistant) even a direct hit shouldn't melt / penetrate them. I can't guarantee anything; I'm just theorising.

I use a webcam for that sole purpose, but it's too damn bright! I can't get anything out of it other than a big blob of whiteness when I turn on the laser  I'm pushing 500mA into the diode... I would assume it's putting out enough to hurt anything... honestly... my eyes are tearing now and they're burning me... even though I had my laptop facing the other way and was looking away from the laser!

It's crazy! I'm guessing it's putting out around 300mW easy... :D VERY nice beam specs though... when the CCD gets a nice fix on it, it looks very nice and uniform :D :D ;D

That's a good price for a 20x plus free shipping to boot! I don't know if that unit has the open can diode however.

Or it could have one of those chip type diodes like factionsmight had.

If the diodes Daedal is using are from a CD/DVD burner I don't think those goggles will work because I think the cutoff range on the goggles is around 803nm, and a CD burners is 780nm.

The diode I have is a 500mW 808nm TEM00. It's a real nice diode (I have 2 of them) but I never got to test it because I can't ever feel safe using it! :-/

if it's 808 contact pseudo, he sells goggles that will protect against 808!
