I don't remember off the top of my head. At this point I'd be checking circuits inside the box. Something just isn't right. I can check some details with mine but I can't do it till tonight when I get home.

Okay, thank you. Is it possible that it's just very overpressure and that's what's causing all of the problems?

At this point I'm pretty sure it's a power issue. The tube may be stubborn, but id be much more inclined to believe it's a supply issue. The cyonics tubes don't really go bad with sitting. I still see original ones back from when they were blue and not black, from before they were bought by uniphase that still light fine. I'm not ruling it out but I'm less inclined to believe that's the problem.

Edit: ultimately if you really want to get down to it you'd have to test the tube on a known good supply.

Okay.
Is it ever possible to use the pins on the controller like you would the pins on the power supply? Shorting them, etc. so I can turn the laser on with the controller in?

How would I access power control using the pins? It says pin 7 accepts 0 to 15 VDC, so connecting it to pin 13 should set full power. However that just kills power.

Pin 7 is light control - you want current control - that's pin 6.

You need a 5k pot. Pin 6 (Curr. control) to the wiper, pin 13(+15VDC) to one leg of the pot and pin 11(return/GND) to the other leg. Pin 8 is your tube current monitor - hook up a multimeter between that and one of the control grounds (pin 11 works, but there's plenty to choose from) - set to 2VDC scale. Calibration is 10A/V. Pin 5 connected to pin 22 selects current mode - you need that selected for current mode to work.

Pin 2 should should also be connected to pin 13 (Enable). 1 and 3 connected as always for the interlock. Leave pin 4 disconnected. Set the current to idle using the pot - one "end" of the pot will set the tube to full current, the other end will set it to minimum (idle) at around 4A (0.4V on your multimeter).

May want to take Kaiser up on his offer of a DB25 connector - will make your life a whole lot easier.

Sam's FAQ has a section on starting issues for these here: Sam's Laser FAQ - Complete Ar/Kr Ion Laser Power Supply Schematics

I've attached the manual - see page 31 - installation for wiring as per above. (Page 45 I think if you're going by what the PDF reader says).

Check page 45 on operation for how to work the controller (Page 60 if you're going by the PDF reader's count). That section/chapter of the manual has instructions for all of the controllers made by JDSU for these.

I already have a DB25 connector, a 10 foot wire. I think it is faulty. I'll get some more answers in a few minutes.

Good info. I'll see if I can find a circuit diagram for my controller. It's a nice analog one. Maybe for run it also needs the current command too so might just have to build the whole base circuit shown on the FAQ. I've never tried running mine pins only so I'm just going off pinout here.

The cable does not appear to have been the problem. However, it was the source of the negative current being displayed. After connecting the controller directly to the power supply the current always shows zero (even while trying to start.)
Edit: Also, I still have a few days (10 or so) to send back the power supply as DOA. Should I do this?

Ultimately it comes down to finding out if the tube works or not. This requires a known working power supply. If the tube lights then the power supply is your problem, if not then...well it's s moot point. :)

Well, it's clear enough that the tube works. So should I send back the PSU and purchase another?

There's a link to schematics for a complete analog controller on the FAQ page - has pretty much the same features as the JDSU one. I think it's linked twice - one of the links is broken last I checked.

How long is the cable? Probably having a small voltage induced by something nearby.

Try the controller I described in my last post if you can - then if that's a no go I'd return it.

Thank you Diachi, I do not currently have a 5k potentiometer. Would you be able to recommend one on Amazon or eBay?

Re: WTB: Power supply for 2214-40MLA argon

Whatever works. The 2500 series should work with all of them. Clearly the main supply is fine, but the LV section might have an issue. My liconix 4200 has that issue. Everything works, but the startup timer is a bit wonky. Been that way since I replaced the fuses. I agree with diachi. It's why I have an analog not a digital. But the digital ones are darn nice.

Re: WTB: Power supply for 2214-40MLA argon

I have purchased a 5k potentiometer, and I'll have results in a couple of days.
Also - I connected my multimeter to pins 8 and 14 and found that the idle current seems to be... 7.75 A? It's showing 0.775 V. How could this be possible?
Edit: Oh, pin 8 is light monitor. Connected to pin 9/14 and found reasonable results.
